About this file

This document is a salient characteristics specification sheet for an autonomous eDNA water sampling platform. The platform must collect, filter, and preserve a minimum of 30 eDNA water samples for up to three months without human intervention. The system shall incorporate a UV-based mechanism to minimize biofouling and automatically log sampling metadata throughout operations. The platform must be land-based and deployable from shore, with a compact design transportable by one to two people, and must operate on a swappable battery pack with minimal power consumption.

The sampling platform shall accommodate 47-millimeter diameter filters of various types including polyethersulfone (PES), glass fiber (GF), and mixed cellulose ester (MCE), as well as different preservation solutions such as RNALater and ethanol. The system must demonstrate water volume accuracy of at least 95 percent for sample volumes up to two liters and include reusable, decontaminable filter sample holders to minimize contamination risk during field deployment and laboratory transport. Field servicing requirements are stringent, requiring less than 20 minutes and only one person to complete maintenance tasks. The sampling rate must be user-definable and programmable, and the contractor must provide evidence of validation and testing demonstrating the platform meets all specified requirements.

Salient Characteristics

This platform must meet or exceed the following specifications:

• Collect, filter, and preserve 30 or more eDNA water samples for up to 3 months autonomously

• UV-based system to minimize biofouling

• Logs sampling metadata

• Easy to field service, requiring minimal time (< 20 min) and personnel (1 person)

• Design minimizes contamination risk at the site and also when samples are being transported to the laboratory

• Filter sample holders can be decontaminated and reused multiple times

• Can accommodate different 47-mm diameter filter types (e.g., PES, GF, MCE)

• Can accommodate different sample preservation solutions (e.g., RNALater, EtOH)

• Water volume accuracy of ≥ 95% for ≤ 2 L sample volumes

• Land-based, can be deployed from shore

• Relatively compact and can be carried by 1-2 people

• Run off of battery in the field, swappable battery pack

• Minimum power draw

• Sampling rate is user-definable and programmable

• Evidence of validation and testing
