I. PROJECT BACKGROUND

The park conducted an assessment of metal objects and recommended treatment for the artillery shells and cannons that are part of the museum collection. The park started treatment of the cannons and shells by entering into a CESU agreement with the University of Texas A&M. This agreement expired in 2009. The park contracted conservation work in FY 2014-16 for the treatment of 40 shells and 6 cannons (including the Ordóñez cannon and carriage), however due to the need to install the proper infrastructure and the fact that the conditions of the cannons were not monitored since 2009, the timetable for completion of treatment has changed. The area where work will take place is the Santa Elena Guardhouse workshop.

Work continues and in November 2015, a bronze cannon Proconsul, was back on exhibit in the Visitor Center Building at Castillo San Cristóbal. In situ conservation of cannon rails at Bastión del Carmen was completed in July 2016 and on October 2016 iron cannon #30, was back in exhibit room at the Castillo San Felipe del Morro. 95 additional shells have been treated and completed and are placed on exhibit at Castillo San Cristóbal. Treatment for the bronze cannon, Anade has been completed and is on display at the park. Three additional iron cannons were treated and ready for display in the park as well as an additional 100 shells.

This work is necessary in order to complete the preservation and conservation work on these cannons and shells and have them back on exhibition as soon as possible.
