About this file

This is a Salient Characteristics document specifying requirements for a Data Security, Inc. model LM-1 Degausser, DX-8 Destruction Device and accessories, or equivalent products. The system must meet NSA Evaluated Products List requirements for purging classified/sensitive information from tape media up to 3000 Oersteds and hard disk media up to 5000 Oersteds.

The integrated system requires a degausser with conveyor belt operation, 3-second cycle time, 1,300 pieces per hour throughput, and permanent magnet technology. The destruction device must achieve 1,300 HDDs/hour throughput using deformation (not shredding), include jam recovery, and connect seamlessly with the degausser for automated one-touch operation. Key physical requirements include: degausser footprint max 16"W x 39"D x 17"H (265 lbs), destruction device max 22"W x 41"D x 37"H (735 lbs), total system footprint max 126" x 79". Required accessories include a height-adjustable cart, duo chute, cleated conveyor, and conveyor belt chute. Power requirements are 120V/230V for the degausser and 208V/230V for the destruction device.

Salient Characteristics

Brand name or Equal: Data Security, Inc., model LM-1 Degausser, DX-8 Destruction Device and Accessories.

The following Salient Characteristics are firm requirements and any “or equal” item must meet these characteristics:

I. CLASSIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

1. Degausser must be listed in the NSA EPL for Magnetic Degaussers as meeting the requirement for purging classified/sensitive information from tape media up to 3000 Oersteds.

2. Degausser must be listed in the NSA EPL for Magnetic Degaussers as meeting the requirement for purging classified/sensitive information from longitudinal (l) and perpendicular (p) recorded hard disk media up to 5000 Oersteds.

3. Destruction device must be listed in the National Security Agency (NSA) Evaluated Products List for Hard Disk Drive Destruction Devices.

II. FUNCTIONAL, PERFORMANCE AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. MEDIA

a. Accept tapes and hard drives to 1”H x 4.3” W x 6”D without disassembly.

b. Accept hard drives in their caddies/sleds, up to 1.03”H x 4.41” W x 8.02”D without disassembly.

c. Not require adapters.

2. PERFORMANCE

a. Degausser and Destruction Device must pair seamlessly, creating a one-touch, closed loop system where media enters the degausser and drops directly into the destruction device before being conveyed into a disposal bin without human interaction.

b. Degausser Must:

1. Use a conveyor belt to transport media through the magnetic field.

2. Use permanent magnet technology.

3. Have a cycle time of 3 seconds or less.

4. Have a throughput of at least 1,300 pieces of media per hour.

5. Be able to operate on a standard tabletop or cart.

6. Be able to connect to a hard disk drive destruction device so media can be introduced into the degausser and automatically pass to the destruction device to be physically destroyed without human intervention providing a seamless one-touch operation.

7. Be listed in the NSA EPL for Magnetic Degaussers as providing one pass operation for disk and tape storage device erasure.

c. Destruction Device Must:

1. Have a throughput of at least 1,300 HDDs/hour.

2. Use a deformation mechanism that does not require sharpening. Device must not use shredding technology.

3. Must reverse to provide jam recovery capability.

4. Must have two accessory outlets, providing power and operation to a connected degausser and an out-feed conveyer belt.

5. Must be able to physically connect to a conveyor belt degausser for automatic transfer (non-human interaction) of media between degausser and destruction device.

6. Device must be simple to operate and have the following user controls:

a. Start/Stop Push Buttons

b. Operating Indicator

c. Forward/Off/Momentary Reverse Selector

d. Hour Meter

e. HDD Size Indicator

7. Device must have Operator Safeguards:

a. Safety rated tamper resistance interlocks.

b. In-feed and out-feed distances at a length making it impossible to reach, keeping operator’s extremities from the destruction process.

c. Industrial grade emergency stop control.

d. Emergency stop.

3. DIMENSIONS and WEIGHT

a. Degausser Must:

1. Have a footprint no greater than 16” W x 39” D x 17” H.

2. Weigh no more than 265 lbs.

b.Destruction Device Must:

1. Have a small footprint no greater than 22”W x 41”D x 37”H.

2. Weigh no more than 735 lbs.

3. Must be on castor wheels.

c. System

1. The complete degausser, destruction device with accessories, must provide both an in-line and T configuration.

a. The footprint of the system must not be larger 126” x 79”.

4. POWER REQUIREMENT

a. Degausser must be 120V, 60Hz, 4A or Be 230V, 60Hz, 2A. Destruction Device must be 208V, 60Hz, 9 Amps or 230V, 50Hz, 8 Amps. Cleated Conveyor accessory must be 120V or 230V.
