8.0 MINE OPENING AND SHAFT BACKFILL
8.1 Scope
The work involves the placement of onsite soil and rock into the partially collapsed mine opening and the exploration and filling of a suspected mine shaft/mine feature at the approximate locations shown on Plan Sheet S1 and S2. The mine opening was previously filled in when the site was abandoned. Over the years the material placed at the rock and soil interface near the top of the backfill has settled exposing a hole that would allow a person to crawl into the mine.
Adjacent to this is a depression that seems to be in the shape of a shaft or other mine feature.
The ground surface is spongy and it is not known the extent of fill that was used to previously fill the hole.
8.2 Description of Work
8.2.1 Mine Opening: The contractor shall gain access to the top of the mine openings and shaft location via the least disruptive path that minimizes disturbance to existing trees. The path must be pre-approved prior to clearing it. An excavator or similar equipment will be trammed up to the area. Onsite soil and rock adjacent to the opening shall be used to fill the exposed area. This material will be placed and compacted in lifts with the bucket of the machine. The surrounding area will be blended in to the back fill to allow for a smooth transition between disturbed and undisturbed slopes.
8.2.2 Shaft Area: The contractor shall partially excavate out the depressed area to determine the make-up of the fill material. If a void is found the hole shall be filled with surrounding rock material and soil. The excavator shall stay back a minimum of 10 feet from the edge of the depression while exploration work is being done, Material placed into the area shall be compacted in lifts by the bucket of the excavator. Once fill has come up to the elevation of the surrounding surface a two foot mound of soil will be placed over the area and graded to provide a smooth transition to the surrounding area.
At the completion of the work, all disturbed areas shall be regraded in a manner as shown on the plans and revegetated in accordance with Section 9.0.
8.3 Measurement and Payment
The method of measurement and basis on payment for Mine Opening and Shaft Backfill shall be on a lump sum basis, as indicated by the bid schedule for Mine Opening and Shaft Backfill and shall include full compensation for all items described within this section, creating access, excavation of materials and placement and compaction.
