Autopsy brain evaluations are an integral part of the autopsy service and are also integrated in the UCI residency program, where the UCI residents perform the autopsies. Therefore, due to the needed continuity in the service, brain evaluations must be performed at UCI. Sending the brains to other institutions would disrupt this continuity which would result in less quality in for our veteran’s autopsy reports and in a loss of education quality for our residents. The continuity of need for the education of the UCI Pathology residents rotating at the VA is essential. Residents performing autopsies at the VA Hospital and at UCI Medical Center and would not be able to follow the educational process of the VA autopsy brains if they were to be send to another vendor. For continuity of education, they should have access to both grossing and slide preparation/surgical diagnosis in BOTH institutions.
