2. Brief Description of Supplies/ Services required and the intended use/Estimated Amount:

Edward Hines Jr. VA Medical Center located in Hines, Illinois has a brand name FUJIFILM Sonosite, Inc. only Sonosite PX Ultrasound System, which will be awarded as a firm fixed price contract. This procurement is intended to be utilized by Surgical Services in order to conduct high‐frequency sound waves to produce images of structures within the body of Anesthesia patients.

Estimated Amount: $X.XX

3. Unique characteristics that limit availability to only one brand, with the reason no other supplies or services can be used:

Hines VA already own’s and utilize the same units within the department, thus by staying with the same ultrasound system staff can remain proficient and provide the upmost care to patients.

Furthermore, the Hospital will be able to cross utilize Curvilinear probes, which are valued at $12,500.00 each. Device will be used for procedures of Regional Anesthesia Blocks and Guided Vascular Access (both peripheral and central vascular). The Anesthesiologists at Hines are experts in ultrasound guided nerve block procedures. These complex procedures require precise localization to enable accurate needle placement and injection. This is a critical issue in the goal of achieving safe nerve blockade without potential complications such as nerve injuries and arterial injuries, with potential long term or even permanent loss of nerve function. Safe surgery requires the optimal equipment for the procedures that need to be done. This is the device that the Anesthesiologists have selected based upon their many years of experience in these techniques and their experience of this particular device compared to other brands and models they have used or tested within their various practice locations. The Anesthesiologists have selected this brand and model because of its reliability, portability, and image quality required for doing the procedure safely and efficiently. The device software provides image enhancement features that are uniquely suited to the procedures that are being done at Hines. The support staff is trained to setup this device and support the Anesthesiologists while the procedure is in progress. Other support staff is trained to clean and prepare the device for quick access and are able to deploy this device to any of the rooms that will require it. For safety reasons it is important that probes and cables are interchangeable from one device to another. If one gets contaminated during a procedure or malfunctions, then an exchange with another clean probe can be deployed to the sterile field without setting a different device with a different set of probes. There are years of familiarity and expertise that has been acquired using this brand device. Deploying a single brand name device is important to maintaining high levels of proficiency based upon the repetitive use and accumulated experience with the same device.
