The USDA, USFS, Northern Region 1 intends to solicit a firm-fixed-price construction contract for the rehabilitation/reconstruction of 3 bridges along the Hiawatha trail in northern Idaho.
The Route of Hiawatha Project was developed as part of the Great American Outdoors Act. Three of the trestles are in a state of advanced deterioration requiring correcting of the critical findings identified in previous inspection reports. The site was once a railroad used by the Milwaukee Railroad. The trestles were constructed between 1906 and 1910. The U.S. Forest Service took over ownership of the route in 1981. It is currently used by the public as a bike trail with a concessionaire operating tours on the trail during summer months.
Clear Creek Bridge (Bridge Number 230) is 760 feet long and 22 feet wide. It consists of 14 built-up steel girder main spans supported by steel towers. Each span has two built-up steel girders 8 feet deep supporting a timber plank deck 7.5 inches deep with 8 inches of gravel ballast. There are timber walkways on either side of the bridge with cable railing providing fall protection on either side of the deck. The timber deck is in poor condition.
Barnes Creek Bridge (Bridge Number 218) is 502 feet long and 19 feet wide built on a horizontal curve. It consists of built-up steel girder main spans and concrete arch approach spans supported on steel towers. The main spans consist of seven (7), simple spans of two built-up steel girders 7.5 feet deep supporting a pre-cast gravel filled concrete trough deck. Timber walkways on either side of the bridge are cantilevered off the concrete trough deck. A cable railing provides fall protection on either side of the deck. The concrete approach arch supports a cast-in place deck and gravel running surface.
The concrete approach spans concrete trestle footings are in poor to fair condition.
Small Creek Bridge (Bridge Number 216) is 512 feet long and 19 feet wide built on a horizontal curve. The bridge has two (2) concrete approach spans and seven built-up steel spans 7.5 feet deep. The deck is a pre-cast gravel filled concrete trough deck. The cable railings are the same as Barnes and Clear Creek Bridges. The concrete approach arch spans consist of cast-in place concrete and are in poor condition. The deck and trestle footings are in poor to fair condition.
Anticipated work to be completed includes the following:
Clear Creek: Footing protection, Deck replacement, Handrail replacement, Inspection access system construction.
Barnes Creek: Footing protection, Deck replacement, Handrail replacement, Inspection access system construction, Two approach span replacements, Two new bridge bents, Two new bridge concrete abutments.
Small Creek: Footing protection, Deck replacement, Handrail replacement, Inspection access system construction, Two approach span replacements, Two new bridge bents, Two new bridge concrete abutments.
