Statement of Work

TITLE OF PROJECT

Development of Surface Acoustic Wave Wireless Sensor System for Real-time Monitoring Respirator of Fit

SIGNIFICANCE

About 5 million U.S. workers use respiratory protection. In 2016, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showed over 5,000 worker deaths, of which approximately 10% resulted from exposure to hazardous environments.1 Respirators are important personal protective equipment. Respirator employ the use of a filter to remove hazardous particles from the breathing air. The respirator’s ability to perform this function also depends on its fit. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires that each employee who is required to use a respirator undergo annual fit testing to ensure the model and size respirator they are using provides the expected level of protection.2 OSHA also requires a user seal check to check fit when first donning a respirator. However, throughout the day or during use, fit is typically not assessed and any leaks or breaks in respirator seal may go undetected by the wearer.

Currently, there is no way to assess respirator fit in real-time while workers perform their tasks. This project will design and fabricate a novel and compact Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) sensor system. This system will use an innovative sensor designed to be embedded into a reusable Elastomeric Half Mask Respirators (EHMRs) and Filter Facepiece Respirators (FFRs), like N95 respirator. This sensor will then communicate wirelessly with a receiver allowing the continuous flow of information from the system to a monitoring system, allowing near real-time measurement and reporting of seal quality.

OBJECTIVES

The overall objective of this study is to develop an innovative sensing system that includes a sensor that can be embedded into reusable EHMRs and FFRs, to assess and monitor leakage in real-time through a wireless receiver by continuously measuring the particle concentration inside and outside of an EHMR and a FFR, thus deriving a fit factor. The proposed sensor will be low cost, small, and high precision, enabling effective monitoring of the environment. The associated wireless communication system will be capable of providing real-time measurement of fit without the line-of-sight requirement. Thereby allowing the seal quality of respirators worn by employees to be tracked for multiple locations.

SCOPE OF WORK

This contract will develop a surface acoustic wave sensor system (sensor and associated wireless communication devices and software) that can be embedded into an EHMR and FFR for the real-time measurement of fit. Performance requirements of the developed sensor system include:

1. Ability to simultaneously monitor particle concentrations inside and outside of the EHMR and FFR, provide a real-time fit factor, and ability to create an instant warning when failures of fit occur to minimize hazardous exposures when respirator leakage occurs.

2. Ability to monitor temperature and humidity in real time with commercially available sensors.

3.

Miniaturization by a Micro Electrical Mechanical System (MEMS) technique, which makes it feasible to embed the proposed sensor in the EHMRs, therefore, more wearable/portable and effective compared to the conventional PortaCount® or CPCs.

4. Design and fabrication of novel PVDF-based soft SAW sensors which can be embedded in curve surfaces. Such sensors will have more flexibility and can be deployed in a wider area.

5. Capable of higher sensing accuracy and sensibility than conventional PortaCount® or CPCs due to the SAW resonator's mass-frequency effect’s ability to detect the absorption on a molecular scale.

6.

Lower energy consumption, thereby capable of monitoring fit over prolonged periods.

7.

Capable of wireless data communication.

8. Sensors can be embedded within an EHMR and an FFR without affecting fit, function, decontamination, or dead space gas characteristics when worn.

9. Ability to set limits for fit factors.

Expected Outcome Failures of fit contribute to unanticipated exposures to potentially hazardous airborne particulates. This project will develop a sensing system that is capable of real-time fit monitoring with the ability to determine and provide a warning to the user when leaks occur. This feedback can impact the health and safety of millions of respirator users, improving the quality of their respiratory protection in their working environment. Having a respirator that is easier to fit will better protect employees from hazards on the job thereby reducing occupational illness. In a word, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

This study aims to develop a sensitive and portable SAW sensor that can be embedded in an EHMR and an FFR. The successful development of these capabilities could revolutionize the way respirators are used to protect workers in hazardous environments.

MINIMUM VENDOR QUALIFICATIONS

Contractor must have demonstrated expertise on SAW sensors development and the applications to Gas/Particles concentration measurements. A sole source contract was requested with the University of North Texas’s Smart Materials Lab led by the Prof. Zhang. This lab has many years’ experience on SAW sensor development. Specially, they have recently developed a ZnO Nanorods-based SAW sensor for high temperature gas species measurement, which resulted in high accuracy and high sensitivity. In this project, they will develop a new SAW sensor for particles concentration measurement based on their unique technology, this uniquely well qualified to provide the sole source service on this research project. Prof. Zhang’s expertise is on the development of piezoelectric sensors including Bulk acoustic wave sensors and Surface acoustic wave sensors for the measurement of gas concentration, pressure, temperature and viscosity. He has been awarded many sensor-related projects from a variety of funding agencies evidenced in his CV. An example is a recent DOE funded project on the development of dual mode pressure and temperature sensors for nuclear reactor monitoring. The outcome of the project is a prototype of a temperature self-compensated pressure/temperature sensor published in high-impact journal (Pham, Thanh Tuong, Haifeng Zhang, Sujan Yenuganti, Suresh Kaluvan, and John A. Kosinski. "Design, Modeling, and Experiment of a Piezoelectric Pressure Sensor Based on a Thickness-Shear-Mode Crystal Resonator." IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics 64, no. 11 (2017): 8484-8491.). In a recent NSF funded project, Prof. Zhang’s group has developed a miniature high temperature gas sensor for the detection of gas species in high temperature harsh environment, the gas sensor they developed will be a good alternative to expensive, bulky gas chromatography devices (Zhang, C., Jiang, W., Ghosh, A., Wang, G. and Zhang, H., 2019. ZnO enhanced miniaturized langasite MEMS micro-cantilever structured resonator for high temperature gas sensing. Smart Materials and Structures 29 (5). 2019). In this project, Prof. Zhang’s group will develop a compact SAW particle sensor for the respirator applications, which is well aligned with his expertise as they are specialized in developing SAW sensor including the sensor design, fabrication and test.
