ADDENDUM INDEX

GENERAL ITEMS

Questions submitted and Answers Provided APPLICABLE TO THE PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS:

• Items #1 through Item #3 inclusive.

ATTACHMENTS

• Updated Appendix B – Arc Melting Specification Rev.1, dated 02/07/2022

GENERAL ITEMS

Questions submitted and Answers Provided:

Question. Section C, Subsection 3, Factor 1.e and 1.e.1. What is the maximum raw material volume associated with the melt size of 1100g and of 2000g?

Answer. That mass is based on Fe density, so volume can be assumed from that.

Question. Section C, Subsection 3, Factor 2.a. What is the minimum/maximum size of the water-cooled surface?

Answer. We are not specifying any sizes of water-cooled surface.

Question. Vacuum requirement of 10-7 Pa is too high and not necessary for melting alloy using inert gas. Ender use may mean 10-7 torr. Please confirm.

Answer. That should be 10-7 torr (note this is only preferred, not required)

Question. Quenching melt into water is not suitable in a high vacuum system. The possibility is to quench a water cold mold. Please confirm.

Answer. We don't have a requirement for quenching melt into water. We said preferred to have water cooled mold.

Ames Laboratory RFP SC-22-0839 ADDENDUM NUMBER 1

Question. Please confirm the max melting amount. It will be a different design for 1000g and 2000 g.

Answer. We don't have a max melting amount, but rather a minimum requirement of how much the system can handle. The system must be able to melt 1000 g (based on Fe density). The ability to melt 2000 g is preferred.

APPLICABLE TO THE PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS

ITEM #1 Specification I. E. – Add “(Based on iron density)”.

ITEM #2 Specification I. E. 1. – Add “(Based on iron density)”.

ITEM #3 Specification 3.B. – Change “…10 -7 Pa…” to “…10-7 torr…”.

Appendix B – Arc Melting System Specifications

RFP A22-0839 for quotes for metal and alloy melting/solidification center

The following is a request for a single system, modular system, or multiple systems that can meet the following conditions for preparation of metals and alloys in laboratory batch sizes.

Requirements:

I. Melting:

A. Ability to operate melting process in inert gas or vacuum

1. Ability to getter the atmosphere preferred B. Ability to melt metals, including refractory elements up to Tungsten (3,422°C) in a crucible or hearth with minimal contamination C. Electric arc melting preferred D. Electromagnetic stirring available to ensure homogeneous alloy melting E. Melt size 50-1100g (Based on iron density)

1. Capability up to 2000g preferred (Based on iron density) F. Load-lock or ability to feed without breaking atmosphere preferred

II. Processing:

A. Rapid quenching onto a water-cooled surface option desired (similar to strip casting 50-500 rpm) B. Interchangeable mold preferred

1. Capability to pour molten charge into cooled crucibles for rapid solidification

2. Water cooled molds preferred

C. Modular or integrated powder atomization of molten metal desired D. Centrifugal casting capability preferred E. Heated nozzle or tundish for casting and pouring preferred

Rev. 1 02/07/2022
