About this file
This is a Technical Manufacturing Specification document for Titanium-Niobium alloy materials used in superconducting radio frequency cavities for the PIP-II 650 MHz accelerator at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory.
The specification establishes material requirements for titanium-niobium alloy billets, bars, and rods used in superconducting cavity components. Key requirements include: chemical composition with titanium at 55±1%, niobium as the remainder, and controlled levels of impurities including aluminum (≤0.01%), carbon (≤0.02%), hydrogen (≤0.0045%), oxygen (≤0.1%), and tantalum (≤0.25%); hardness testing according to ASTM E92/E384 standards with acceptable range of 130-170 HV; and mechanical strength verification via tension testing per ASTM E8 with minimum yield strength of 60,000 psi (410 MPa) and minimum tensile strength of 65,000 psi (450 MPa). Testing samples must be taken from finished material after all metallurgical processing including annealing and before work hardening processes. Materials must be supplied with complete traceability documentation including lot numbers, serial numbers, and heat treatment numbers, along with certification reports documenting chemical analysis, hardness testing, and tension testing results using identified testing standards. Packaging must prevent damage during transportation, with details to be discussed prior to shipment. The specification references ASTM B884-11 (reapproved 2019) and ASTM B265 as foundational documents while permitting industry or manufacturer standards when identified and approved by Fermilab.

1 Introduction
Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL, Fermilab) designs and constructs superconducting particle accelerators. This specification addresses Titanium-Niobium alloy for superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities, which are a key component of particle accelerators.
Components are fabricated from stock by machining or other metal-forming processes.
Components are joined by electron-beam welding or TIG welding. Cavities are operated in a cryogenic vacuum environment, requiring pressure certifications and material traceability. All of these factors motivate the content of this specification.
2 Reference Documents
The requirements in this specification are originated or modified from ASTM B884-11 (reapproved 2019) and ASTM B265. This specification refers to ASTM Testing methods.
However, industry or manufacturer’s standards are allowed as long as those standards are identified and approved by Fermilab.
• ASTM B884-11 (Reapproved 2019) Standard Specification for Niobium-Titanium Alloy Billets, Bar, and Rod for Superconducting Applications
• ASTM B265 Specification for Titanium and Titanium Alloy Strip, Sheet, and Plate
• ASTM E92 Standard Test Methods for Vickers Hardness and Knoop Hardness of Metallic Materials
• ASTM Test Methods E384 Standard Test Method for Microindentation Hardness of Materials
• ASTM E8 Standard Test Methods for Tension Testing of Metallic Materials
