Bellvue Water Treatment Facility Filter Effluent Channel Repair Method of Procedure February 07, 2025

Purpose:

The purpose of this Method of Procedure (MOP) document is to inform the contractor on a specific method to repair the filter effluent channel at the City of Greeley’s Bellvue Water Treatment Facility.

Issue:

The filter effluent channel has witnessed concrete surface corrosion exposing aggregates allowing the channel to further degrade over time. Damage to the concrete channel surface is suspected to come from low pH in the finished water due to chlorine dosing levels. These same conditions have contributed to oxidation of the exposed steel decking over top the channel as well.

Suggested Solution:

A method to repair the concrete with exposed aggregate in the channel is the use of a portland cement and silica sand based product for an application to directly correct surface deterioration. This application would then be followed by an epoxy-based surface coating system rated for potable water use that can withstand a range of pH. The same epoxy-based surface coating system would be used to coat concrete surfaces not experiencing aggregate loss as well as the surface of the exposed steel decking.

Exposed Aggregate Concrete Coating System:

Estimated at 585 SF

▪ Surface preparation SSPC – SP13, CSP 3-5

▪ Surface Repair with Cemtec Silatec Microsilica Mortar o ½” to 1” depending on concrete degradation.

▪ Prime coat with Shermin Williams Sherplate 600 primer o 4.0 – 8.0 mils DFT

▪ Topcoat with Shermin Williams Sherplate PW (NSF) o 18 – 22 mils DFT

Other Concrete:

Estimated at 530 SF

▪ Surface preparation SSPC – SP13, CSP 3-5

▪ Prime coat with Shermin Williams Sherplate 600 primer o 4.0 – 8.0 mils DFT

▪ Topcoat with Shermin Williams Sherplate PW (NSF) o 18-22 mils DFT

Steel Coating System:

Estimated at 865 SF

▪ Surface preparation SSPC-SP10

▪ Apply (2) coats of Shermin Williams Sherplate 600 at 4.0 – 8.0 mils DFT per coat

DESCRIPTION

MICROSILICA MORTAR is a blend of Portland cement, graded silica sand, fibers and silica fume.

The mortar may be hand or spray applied, usually from ½” to 2” in depth. Uses include repairing concrete walls, ceilings, lining brick or concrete manholes and lift stations, etc. Microsilica Mortar provides an extremely dense matrix and will accept coatings at earlier ages than typical Portland cement repair products.

SURFACE PREPARATION

Remove all loose concrete, brick or mortar from affected area by mechanical means. Surfaces shall be free of paints, oils, dirt, dust, curing compounds, sealers, form release agents or any material that would prevent mortar from coming into contact with the open pores of the concrete. Shot blasting, sandblasting, chipping and high pressure water blasting are all excellent surface preparation methods. Smooth concrete surfaces may require etching with muriatic of sulfamic acid, then thoroughly cleaned with pressure washer. Dampen area to achieve a saturated, surface dry condition (SSD). Leaving no puddles.

MIXING & APPLICATION

NOTE: [The material will flash set if contaminated with calcium aluminate cement.] Make sure all equipment for mixing, pumping, etc. are free from any calcium aluminate cement or products that contain calcium aluminate cement. Begin by adding 1 gallon clean water to mixing vessel and then add 1 bag (60#) Microsilica Mortar. Adjust water as needed (up to 1.4 gallons) to provide proper consistency for placing by hand or pump sprayer. Apply in successive lifts to desired thickness. Use brush, float or trowel to achieve desired texture.

CURING

Damp curing or use of a curing compound, that complies with ASTM C‐309, may be necessary to prevent rapid drying of mortar. Curing compounds may need to be removed prior to coating. Replace manhole cover as soon as troweling is finished.

LIMITATIONS

Ambient and surface temperatures must be 38º F and rising during application. Protect from rain until initial set has been achieved. To avoid flash setting, Do Not contaminate Silatec MSM with Cemtec Hydraulic cement, Rapid Cure Vertical or Silatec

CAM.

Minimum thickness: ½ inch Maximum thickness: 4 inches in successive applications

STORAGE & HANDLING

Shelf life: 12 months in the original unopened container.

Storage: Store in a dry area away from direct sunlight. The product should be conditioned to between 40º F and 95º F before use.

Advice on system design:

Provide local exhaust ventilation to maintain recommended P.E.L.

Personal protective equipment Respiratory protection:

Breathing protection if dusts are formed.

Hand protection:

Chemical resistant protective gloves, Manufacturer's directions for use should be observed because of great diversity of types.

Eye protection:

Tightly fitting safety goggles (chemical goggles).

Body protection:

Body protection must be chosen based on level of activity and exposure.

General safety and hygienemeasures:

Avoid contact with the skin, eyes and clothing. Avoid inhalation of dusts. In order to prevent contamination while handling, closed working clothes and working gloves should be used. Handle in accordance with good building materials hygiene and safety practice. When using, do not eat, drink or smoke. Hands and/or face should be washed before breaks and at the end of the shift. At the end of the shift the skin should be cleaned and skin-care agents applied. Gloves must be inspected regularly and prior to each use. Replace if necessary (e.g. pinhole leaks). Contaminated equipment or clothing should be cleaned after each use or disposed of.
