About this file

This document is a User Requirement Specification (URS) for a bulk dryer system issued by the Dakota Bioproducts Innovation Institute (Dakota BioWorx) and South Dakota State University. The URS outlines the requirements for a bulk dryer system to be used in the development of high-quality bioproducts. The system must have a minimum capacity of 30 liters of wet material per batch and be able to process a minimum of 90 liters of wet material in an 8-hour period. The system must be easily cleanable, use food-grade materials, and include data logging capabilities for temperature and food-grade validation. Bids will be evaluated based on compliance with the URS, pricing, lead time, and the vendor's relevant experience and track record.

The contract opportunity is funded in part by the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration and is subject to federal regulations, including the Buy America provision and restrictions related to prohibited entities and boycotts. Vendors must certify compliance with these requirements. Bids should be submitted to the designated contacts at Dakota BioWorx and South Dakota State University.

2 SCOPE

The project will include a bulk dryer. This document defines the requirements for this system. It describes overall requirements that must be met to produce the specific equipment requested. This scope covers procurement, delivery, and start-up support of the specified equipment; no installation is required.

This URS is the input document for:

• Equipment procurement purposes

• Equipment sizing

• Functional and technical specifications

Bids will be evaluated based on compliance with the URS, pricing, lead time, and the company’s experience and track record as they pertain to the relevant equipment. See Evaluation Criteria below.

3 BACKGROUND

The Dakota Bioproducts Innovation Institute (Dakota BioWorx) is a research facility for the development of high-quality bioproducts. Many bioproducts include bulk solids that require drying. Examples include animal feed that has undergone bioconversion or any large-particle suspended solids that don’t require spray drying into powder. The majority of these bioproducts will utilize our decanter centrifuge prior to drying in the bulk dryer.

4 PROCESS DESCRIPTION

Bioproducts needing the bulk dryer can be processed in a variety of drying configurations. Drying systems that will work and can compete within this RFP include tray dryers, fluidized beds, drum dryers, and freeze dryers. All theses systems are capable of providing drying capacity and can compete on cost and capacity. The process is roughly the same between all these systems where an environment encouraging either evaporation or sublimation is applied to desiccate solids that already have a large amount of moisture removed via centrifugation.

Revision No.: 0

5 BASIS OF DESIGN

5.1 Capacities

The system shall be able to process at minimum 30L of wet biomass product.

Ideally, the system can provide semi-continuous drying, larger batch drying, or smaller but quick batch drying.

5.2 Health, Safety and Environment

The system shall include protections against the main hazards of drying including dust management and overheating/fire as applicable.

5.3 Operation, personnel and automation

The system shall require limited operation while drying, with the bulk of operation on loading and unloading the product. The system shall be able to run continuously with automation to detect and end drying at specific moisture levels.

5.4 Materials of Construction

The material of construction should be compatible with food grade processes and include validation of materials and construction.

5.5 Reliability & maintenance

Continuous operation during working hours and appropriate maintenance and cleaning is expected for the bulk drying system.
