About this file

This document is a User Requirement Specification (URS) issued by the Dakota Bioproducts Innovation Institute for the procurement and installation of a new screw conveyor system. The system will be used to transport ground material from the hammer mill and air assist baghouse to supersacks or other containers at a minimum rate of 4,000 pounds per hour. The screw conveyors will be constructed of carbon steel, suitable for continuous 24-hour operation in a dusty environment, and include features such as dust-tight covers, sealed bearings, and a dedicated drive system. Bids should be submitted to the specified contacts by the due date and will be evaluated based on technical requirements, pricing, lead time, warranty, and vendor experience.

The document also includes provisions related to the Buy America Act, restrictions on business with certain foreign entities, and a certification regarding no state legislator interest in the contract. Funding for the project will be partially provided through a grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce, Economic Development Administration. No installation services are required as part of this procurement.

2 SCOPE

The project will include the installation of a new Screw Conveyor. This document defines the requirements and deliverables for this system. It describes overall requirements that must be met to produce the specific equipment requested. Equipment procurement, delivery, and start-up support are included. No installation is required.

This URS is the input document for the:

• Equipment procurement purposes. Equipment sizing

• Functional and technical specifications.

3 BACKGROUND

The Dakota Bioproducts Innovation Institute is a research facility for the development of high-quality bioproducts. Screw conveyors have been identified as a means to transport materials from the hammer mill system to supersacks or other containers.

User Requirement Specification

Screw Conveyors

4 PROCESS DESCRIPTION

The screw conveyors will be utilized in the hammer mill area. The screw conveyors will receive ground material from the hammer mill and air assist baghouse. The conveyors will transfer the ground material out of the hammer mill plenum and into a supersack. Two screw conveyors will be utilized: one for the plenum discharge and one to take material from the first conveyor/airlock to the container.

5 BASIS OF DESIGN

5.1 Capacities

The screw conveyors will be sized to be capable of transferring ground material from the hammer mill at a minimum rate of 4000 pounds per hour of material that is 35 pounds per cubic foot in density. The material is expected to be less than 18% moisture.

5.2 Construction

The screw conveyors will be constructed of carbon steel. The conveyors will have end plates with dust seals. The flights will be 3/16” minimum thickness.

The plenum discharge screw conveyor will bolt directly to the plenum and be covered only on the overhanging portion of the conveyor. The plenum screw conveyor will be slave driven from an airlock that will be attached to its discharge flange.

The incline conveyor will have a single inlet and discharge and will be covered the length of the conveyor. The incline conveyor will have its own dedicated drive.

5.3 Health, Safety and Environment (HSE)

The screw conveyors will satisfy appropriate conformity assessment procedures and shall be rated for a dusty environment (Class II, Div II).

Proper drive guards will be provided to protect personnel. Screw conveyor covers will be clamp on type to require tools for removal.

5.4 Operation, personnel and automation

The screw conveyors will be set up to be operated by a single operator. All controls will be housed in an electrical control panel in the milling room.

5.5 Materials of Construction

Materials of construction for the screw conveyors will be 10 Ga carbon steel sealed construction for the troughs and endplates and 12 Ga carbon steel for the covers.

5.6 Reliability & maintenance

The screw conveyors will be designed to operate routinely during 8 to 12-hour per day milling operations.
