3 BACKGROUND
The Dakota Bioproducts Innovation Institute is a research facility for the development of high-quality bioproducts. A hammer mill has been identified as one of the size reduction technologies that will be available for customer use.
4 PROCESS DESCRIPTION
The Hammer Mill will be used to grind a variety of products. It will be mounted on a steel structure that will position the hammer mill over a plenum and collection screw.
An air assist filter and fan will provide a negative air draw to the Hammer Mill system.
Dust collected from the air assist filter will join with the ground Hammer Mill product via a collection screw conveyor that will convey the sized material to a collection vessel or supersack. A feed hopper will be positioned over the hammer mill feeder to allow the unloading of super sacks of material to be ground. A collection screw conveyor will be mounted to a hammer mill plenum that will allow ground material and fine particles to settle for collection in the screw conveyor.
5 BASIS OF DESIGN
5.1 Capacities
The Feed Hopper will be sized to contain the contents of a super sack. This will be roughly 64 cubic feet. The Hammer Mill plenum will be sized to allow settling of ground material from the hammer mill into the collection screw conveyor.
Cross sectional area of the plenum will be designed to provide for 100 fpm or less air velocity from the hammer mill discharge to the air assist baghouse inlet so that material can drop effectively into the discharge screw conveyor.
5.2 Construction
The feed hopper and the hammer mill plenum shall be constructed of 7 Ga carbon steel. The feed hopper will be open top and have a bottom discharge flange to mate directly with the hammer mill rotary feeder.
Page 4 of 9 User Requirement Specification
Flanges will be provided on the top of the plenum properly sized for the selected hammer mill and selected air assist baghouse. Requirements for the support structure and other component parts will be defined by the hammer mill plenum supplier in a pre-purchase detailed proposal and drawings.
5.3 Health, Safety and Environment (HSE)
The hammer mill feed hopper and plenum will satisfy appropriate conformity assessment procedures. The plenum shall be provided with an explosion vent on the end closest to the baghouse flange sized properly using a Kst of 147 bar-m/s and a Pmax of 7.77 barg. The hammer mill plenum will be designed for a Pred of 2.50 psi.
5.4 Operation, personnel and automation
The hammer mill feed hopper and plenum will be set up to be operated by a single operator. No automation or electrical controls are needed for the feeder or plenum.
5.5 Materials of Construction
Materials of construction for the feeder hopper and plenum will be 7 Ga.
carbon steel. Welds on seams and flanges will be continuous for dust tight operation. Flanges for the feeder hopper discharge, hammer mill inlet, baghouse inlet, explosion vents and discharge screw conveyor will be carbon steel angle iron.
5.6 Reliability & maintenance
The hammer mill plenum will be designed to operate routinely during 8-12hour per day milling operations.
