BUILDING CODES DISCREPANCY

Section 7.4.6 of NFPA 30A and Section 406.8.6 of The International Building Code conflict one another regarding the requirement for fire sprinklers. The discrepancy is as follows.

NFPA 30A 7.4.6 Fire sprinklers are NOT required for this Major Repair Garage.

IBC 406.8.3 A repair garage shall be equipped with an automatic sprinkler system.

The Chapter 120-3-3, Rules and Regulations of the Safety Fire Commissioner, clarifies the coordination of building codes in section 102.10. It states, Section 102.10 Coordination of provisions. This Code shall apply to all buildings, structures and facilities as provided in subsection 102.1 and 102.2, and shall be utilized in conjunction with codes and standards specified in Table 102.10 entitled, " Codes Reference Guide."

According to the table above, fire sprinklers are NOT required for the following reasons.

1. The proposed building meets the limits on height and area for no sprinklers per the IBC.

2. The LSC (NFPA 30A) is the primary code for minimum standards for sprinklers. The LSC does not require fire sprinklers.

NFPA 101 (2018)
