DRAFT STATEMENT OF WORK (SOW)
1. Background: Currently, the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS) is required to replace its nonfunctioning and obsolete Lunar PIXImus X-ray densitometer system. The new instrument is needed to quantify bone mineral density and body composition in live laboratory animals to support various Veterans Affairs (VA) merit-funded projects.
The proposed Medikors InAlyzer2 Type M High Resolution DEXA instrument has been adopted by multiple academic and research institutions, including other VA Medical Centers, for preclinical studies involving bone mineral density and body composition analysis for laboratory animals. These systems are currently in use across a range of applications, including longitudinal bone research, metabolic studies, and body composition assessment in small laboratory animals. This required system measures mailto:Carmyn.Williams@va.gov mailto:Carmyn.Williams@va.gov lean and fat mass with exceptional image quality in live animals with minimal anesthesia and without dissection.
The InAlyzer2 DEXA instrument’s performance, reliability, and suitability for pre-clinical research environments have been well established. Furthermore, DEXA is considered the standard of care for diagnosing and following osteoporosis clinically, while the World Health Organization (WHO) considers it the gold standard in measuring bone mineral density and providing the most accurate results.
Our dually appointed VA Merit-funded Investigators, who also have labs at our university affiliate, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), have extensive knowledge and experience in using the Medikor InAlyzer2 Type M DEXA instrument within their Musculoskeletal Bone Core Lab.
