DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT: The draft document is intended to provide a general description of this project.
**The following is an excerpt for this project.
REQUIRED SPECIFICATIONS:
System in essential characteristics and operational conditions.
Essential Characteristics: The system procured must be able to provide the following Assessment Protocols:
- Vestibular Ocular Reflex test
- Portable Balance Assessment
- Sensory Organization Test
- Motor Control Test
- Adaption Test
- Limits of Stability Test
- Rhythmic Weight Shift
- Weight Bearing Squat and Unilateral Stance.
System must also be able to provide a screening for Concussion protocol.
The platform must be a movable visual surround platform with an immersive virtual reality environment to disrupt vision during test conditions that measures the ability to suppress inaccurate visual cues.
System must be able to provide the following mechanical functions:
- Must have a Dual force plate that can rotate and translate.
- Must have an overhead support bar for patients harness attachment.
- Must run with Windows 7 or above operating system.
- Must have library of immersive virtual reality environments.
Operational Conditions: The System will be used in the Audiology Clinic for patients that have a balance disorder to include Active-Duty military Pilots. It uses an immersive visual field that reflects a computer-generated image to stimulate the visual system. Along with the visual surround the surface of the unit moves, which allows the therapist to test patients’ reaction times, their ability to control posture/balance with ground changes, and function of their vestibular system. During part of the test, the floor is set to move with the patients’ normal body sway, thereby eliminating accurate somatosensory information to be used for balance and targeting a patient’s use of visual and vestibular systems. In other parts of testing, the floor tilts to challenge a posture reaction and slides to measure startle response. All of this information is compared to national norms, which helps to quantify level of involvement and, upon retesting, progress.
