About this file

This is a Request for Information (RFI) from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) seeking information from vendors to design and fabricate three coupled Personnel Safety Shutter (PSS)/Photon Shutter (PS)/Burn Through Monitor (BTM) assemblies for x-ray beamlines, with potential for up to 36 systems over two years. The project, part of the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U), has an estimated magnitude of $300,000 and requires responses by March 20, 2025, with expected delivery in 2026-2027.

The technical requirements include: a water-cooled copper PS block capable of intercepting 2.0kW heat flux per beamline, a pure tungsten PSS/BREM block (200mm x 215mm x 180mm), and space reservation for a BTM system. The assembly must operate in ultra-high vacuum conditions (10-8 Pa), feature vertical motion capability with pneumatic actuation, and include adjustable hard stops and position monitoring switches. The system must be modular enough to be implemented on other beamlines with minimal modifications. LBNL seeks vendors with experience in soft x-ray beamline components, UHV technologies, and FEA analysis capabilities. No set-asides are specified, though small business classification information is requested in the response form.

OVERVIEW & BACKGROUND

The Advanced Light Source (ALS) is a United States Department of Energy funded synchrotron facility that provides users from around the world access to the brightest beams of soft x-rays, together with hard x-rays and infrared, for scientific research and technology development in a wide range of disciplines.

Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U) is the project name for a planned upgrade of the ALS at Berkeley Lab that will endow the ALS with revolutionary x-ray capabilities. The upgraded ALS will occupy the same facility as the current ALS, replacing the existing electron storage ring and leveraging $500 million in existing ALS infrastructure and experimental systems.

One of ALS-U objective is to develop new or to upgrade existing beamlines (BL), in order to be compliant with ALS-U technical specifications and new radiation safety policies. In consequences, following radiation safety components have to be upgraded:

· Personnel Safety Shutter (PSS): physically blocks Bremsstrahlung radiation when closed.

· Photon Shutter (PS): physically blocks the X-ray beam when closed

· Burn Through Monitor (BTM): safety component to ensure the PS works as expected, otherwise triggers signal to shut down the ALS.

Those moving components to be inserted into the beamline path through an actuator will also work under an ultra-high vacuum environment.

The ALS-U project is seeking a vendor to design and fabricate fully coupled PS/BTM/PSS assemblies for three beamlines with, if possible, sufficient modularity such as it could be implemented on other beamlines with few modifications.

The following picture shows a design concept

The system could be in two different positions:

· ‘BREM Collimator position’: the tungsten block let the beamline pass through its openings

· ‘PSS position’: The synchrotron radiation fan is intercepted by the PS. Positioned behind the PS is the PSS–a large tungsten block designed to block Bremsstrahlung radiation. Between the PS and the PSS, a BTM—which has yet to be designed—would be integrated. The BTM integration should be modular, allowing LBL the flexibility to decide whether to implement it.

SCOPE OF WORK

The purpose of this RFI is to evaluate the feasibility, workload, schedule and cost of 3 coupled PS/BTM/PSS systems. The responses should include considerations of

1) Mechanical parts

2) Actuators

3) FEAs

4) Vacuum qualification and testing

5) Design and Fabrication drawings

LBNL intends to collect technical information, a budgetary quotation and a schedule estimate for the complete process, including design, fabrication, and delivery.

Main specifications and requirements are (values may evolve):

1) The length (longitudinal) of PS + BTM + PSS should be less than 350 mm, flange to flange

2) The PSS/BREM should be made of a pure tungsten block, at least of following external dimensions: width: 200 mm, height: 215 mm, length: 180 mm.

3) The light should be able to pass through 2 rectangular holes in the PSS. Their dimension is given in the following picture:

4) The BTM should be, for now, only a space reservation between the PS and the PSS, (blue area in previous pictures) with the same footprint as the PS, and a thickness (longitudinal axis) of 50 mm. As LBNL is still working on a concept, its final characteristics are not yet defined but as far from now, it should be a small chamber filled with gas (air or nitrogen) with no connection to the outside of the vessel.

5) The PS should be a water-cooled copper block, bolted in front of the PSS, in order to intercept light. Its design (with corresponding FEAs) should prove its ability to intercept 3 beamline high heat flux over surfaces in steady state. In consequences, it’s shape may not be a pure parallelepiped. Per beamline, the heat flux could be taken conservatively to 2.0 kW.

The picture below shows an idea of the footprint of the 3 beamlines (1: 30.65 mm x 4.65 mm, 2: 17.34 mm x 5.1 mm, 3: 30.81 mm x 4.65 mm):

Those values might be updated later on, but the order of magnitude will remain the same.

6) PS water-cooling parameters (such as water-flow) should be given by the sub-contractor in order to achieve sufficient cooling efficiency.

7) The PS/PSS assembly should be inserted into the beamline path vertically. The total range of motion should not be less than 100 mm.

8) This vertical motion should be limited by adjustable hard stops, and electrical switches adjustable in position should monitor this assembly displacements with an accuracy less than 0.5 mm.

9) This vertical motion should be controlled by pneumatic actuator, moving the vertical rod. The total weight of moving parts is expected to be less than 200 kg.

Only two positions are foreseen (no need to know the position between the two switches).

10) The main vacuum vessel overall size should give a minimum clearance of 5 mm around each internal component. It must be capable of reaching a base pressure of 10-8 Pa (0.5 nTorr), and ambient pressure outside. No thermal effects are foreseen to be applied to the vessel.

Moreover, it should also include two cylindrical flanges to allow it to be connected to the rest of the beamline structure, and let the beam goes through.
