About this file

This document contains draft specifications for four solid-state radio frequency amplifiers required by the Naval Research Laboratory. The amplifiers must meet specified frequency ranges, output power, gain, input/output connector types, and distortion measures. Amplifier 1 is required for 2-18 GHz with a minimum 20W output and SMA connectors. Amplifier 2 also operates over 2-18 GHz but with a minimum 50W output and Type N connectors. Amplifier 3 is specified for 26.5-40 GHz with a minimum 10W output and 2.92mm connectors. Amplifier 4 in this range must provide a minimum 20W with 2.92mm input and WR28 flange output connectors. The associated federal contract opportunity posting indicates the Navy is seeking potential sources to meet these draft amplifier specifications.

Specifications The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) has a requirement for solid-state radio frequency (RF) amplifiers for lab measurement of RF electronics.

A. The primary requirement is for solid-state RF amplifiers for use in performing lab measurements of RF solid-state device components and circuits. For longevity and reliability, the amplifiers must have integrated protection circuitry and pass typical ageing and burn-in testing. All amplifiers must come with at a 2 year warranty, have variable gain adjustment, be air-cooled, and have readable display presenting operation status to include self-check of critical components. All specifications below must be met across the entire specified frequency range. The amplifiers must be standard commercial products with demonstrated field use.

B. Amplifier 1 (2 to 18 GHz)

· Saturation output power: 20 W (minimum 20 W)

· Input power limit: 5 dBm

· Small signal gain minimum/flatness: 41 dB/±4 dB

· Gain adjustment: 20 dB

· Maximum Input VSWR: 2:1

· Load VSWR at Saturation: 3:1

· 2nd Harmonic Power/Spur at Saturation: -15 dBc/-65 dBc

· IM3 at 13 dB/3 dB back off (10 MHz tone spacing): -38 dBc/-20 dBc

· RF input/output: SMA female/SMA female

C. Amplifier 2 (2 to 18 GHz)

· Saturation output power: 50 W (minimum 50 W)

· Small signal gain minimum/flatness: 49 dB/±4 dB

· Gain adjustment: 20 dB

· Maximum Input VSWR: 2.1:1

· Load VSWR at Saturation: 3:1

· 2nd Harmonic Power/Spur at Saturation: -15 dBc/-65 dBc

· IM3 at 13 dB/3 dB back off (10 MHz tone spacing): -38 dBc/-20 dBc

· RF input/output: Type N female/Type N female

D. Amplifier 3 (26.5 to 40 GHz)

· Saturation output power: 10 W (minimum 10 W)

· Input power limit: 0 dBm

· Small signal gain minimum/flatness: 40 dB/±5 dB

· Gain adjustment: 15 dB

· Maximum Input VSWR: 2:1

· Load VSWR at Saturation: 3:1

· Spur at Saturation: -65 dBc

· Unconditionally Stable

· RF input/output: 2.92 mm female/2.92 mm female

E. Amplifier 4 (26.5 to 40 GHz)

· Saturation output power: 25 W (minimum 20 W)

· Input power limit: 0 dBm

· Small signal gain minimum/flatness: 43 dB/±5 dB

· Gain adjustment: 15 dB

· Maximum Input VSWR: 2:1
