About this file
This Request for Information (RFI) seeks technical and budgetary details for 21 coupled Photon Shutter (PS), Personnel Safety Shutter (PSS), and Burn Through Monitor (BTM) systems for the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U) project at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The systems are for synchrotron radiation beamlines, with specific technical requirements including a maximum longitudinal length of 8.15 inches, a tungsten alloy PSS block, water-cooled copper PS plate, and pneumatic vertical actuator with a 3-inch motion range. The project is funded by the Department of Energy, with an estimated project magnitude of ~$2M and expected delivery between 2026-2027.
Respondents are required to submit comprehensive information by June 20, 2025, covering mechanical parts, actuators, finite element analyses (FEA), and design/fabrication drawings. The RFI specifically requests details on technical capabilities, manufacturing capacity to produce up to 21 systems over two years, CAD and FEA software expertise, ultra-high vacuum (UHV) technology experience, and a budgetary quotation with schedule estimate for three PS/BTM/PSS systems. The solicitation emphasizes that this is an information-gathering exercise, with no guarantee of future contract award, and warns respondents not to include proprietary or confidential information in their submissions.

OVERVIEW & BACKGROUND
The Advanced Light Source (ALS) is a United States Department of Energy funded synchrotron facility that provides users from around the world access to the brightest beams of soft x-rays, together with hard x-rays and infrared, for scientific research and technology development in a wide range of disciplines.
Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U) is the project name for a planned upgrade of the ALS at Berkeley Lab that will endow the ALS with revolutionary x-ray capabilities. The upgraded ALS will occupy the same facility as the current ALS, replacing the existing electron storage ring and leveraging $500 million in existing ALS infrastructure and experimental systems.
One objective for ALS-U is to develop new or to upgrade existing beamlines (BL), in order to be compliant with ALS-U technical specifications and new radiation safety policies. Consequently, the following radiation safety components have to be upgraded:
· Personnel Safety Shutter (PSS): physically blocks Bremsstrahlung radiation when closed.
· Photon Shutter (PS): physically blocks the X-ray beam when closed
· Burn Through Monitor (BTM): safety component to ensure the PS works as expected; otherwise it triggers a signal to shut down the ALS beam.
Those moving components to be inserted into the beamline path through an actuator will also work under an ultra-high vacuum environment.
The ALS-U project is seeking a vendor to design and fabricate fully coupled PS/BTM/PSS assemblies for repeated use at twenty-one beamlines.
Figure 1 shows a design concept:

The system can be in two different positions:
· Retracted/up position (shown in Figure 2): the tungsten alloy block is lifted fully above the beam and above inlet and outlet flanges
Figure 2 – Retracted state of the shutter system concept.
· ‘PSS position’ (shown in Figure 3): The synchrotron radiation fan is intercepted by the PS. Positioned behind the PS is the PSS – a large tungsten block designed to block Bremsstrahlung radiation. Between the PS and the PSS, a BTM—which has yet to be designed—would be integrated. The BTM integration should be modular, allowing LBL the flexibility to decide whether to implement it.

SCOPE OF WORK
The purpose of this RFI is to evaluate the feasibility, workload, schedule, and cost of 21-coupled PS/BTM/PSS systems. The responses should include considerations of
1) Mechanical parts
2) Actuators
3) FEAs
4) Design and Fabrication Drawings
LBNL intends to collect technical information, a budgetary quotation, and a schedule estimate for the complete process, including design, fabrication, and delivery.
The primary specifications and requirements are as follows:
1) The longitudinal length of the shutter assembly (PS+BTM+PSS) should be less than 8.15 in (207.0 mm), upstream face to downstream face.
2) The PSS should be made of a tungsten alloy block (17.0 g/cc), of following external dimensions: width: 5.50 in, height: 3.75 in, length: 7.00 in (139.7 X 95.3 X 177.8 mm).
3) The BTM should be, for now, only a space reservation between the PS and the PSS, (yellow area in previous pictures) with the same footprint as the PS, and a thickness (longitudinal axis) of 0.65 in (16.5 mm). As LBNL is still developing a concept, its final characteristics are not yet defined. Nominally, this part will contain a small volume filled with gas (air or nitrogen) with a connection to the outside of the vessel.
4) The PS should be a normal incidence water-cooled copper plate, bolted in front of the PSS and BTM, in order to intercept light. Its design (with corresponding FEAs) should prove its ability to intercept a beamline heat flux over surfaces in steady state. The total heat per beamline is 200 W.
5) Figure 4 shows an estimate of the beam footprint on the PS, along with the overall dimensions listed previously.
Figure 4 – Overall dimensions of the shutter concept. The beam footprint is shown on the right.2 in wide X 1 in tall beam footprint
These values may be subject to change, but the order of magnitude will remain the same.
6) PS water-cooling parameters (such as water-flow) should be given by the subcontractor in order to achieve sufficient cooling efficiency.
7) The PS/PSS assembly should be inserted into the beamline path vertically. The total range of motion should not be less than 3.00 in (76.2mm).
8) The vertical motion is limited by adjustable mechanical hard stops and electrical switches. The switches should monitor the assembly displacement with an accuracy of less than 0.020 in (0.5 mm).
9) This vertical motion should be controlled by a pneumatic actuator, moving the vertical rod. The total weight of moving parts is expected to be less than 440 lbs (200 kg).
Only two positions are foreseen (no need to know the position between the two switches).
10) LBL will design the main vacuum vessel. The overall size of the LBL design vacuum chamber will give a minimum clearance of 0.125 in (3 mm) around each internal PS PSS component. It will reach a base pressure of 10-8 Pa (0.5 nTorr), and ambient pressure outside. The PS BTM PSS actuator assembly shall be designed by the vendor as fixed onto the center of a standard UHV 12 in fixed conflat flange.
