About this file

This statement of work document outlines requirements for a californium-252 neutron source to be delivered to the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The contractor shall deliver one 50-100 microgram californium-252 source encapsulated in stainless steel with specific dimensions, certified as special form and double or triple encapsulated. Accompanying documentation on the isotopic composition, curium-248 content, and source certification are required. Delivery of the source and documentation is due 270 days after order receipt to NIST's Gaithersburg facility. Inspection and acceptance testing will occur within seven days of receipt, with the contractor warrantying the source for a minimum of one year. Payment terms are net 30 days upon receipt, inspection, acceptance, and contracting officer approval.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

The Contractor shall provide a system that meets all technical specifications identified below. All items must be new. Used or remanufactured equipment will not be considered for award. Experimental, prototype, or custom items will not be considered. The use of “gray market” components are not authorized for sale in the U.S. by the Contractor is not acceptable. All line items shall be shipped in the original manufacturer’s packaging and include all original documentation and software, when applicable.

Line Item 0001:

Description: Neutron Source Quantity: 1 A. Technical Specifications

a. The source must contain 50-100 micrograms of Cf-252 encapsulated in a welded enclosure made from stainless steel. Type 304L stainless steel is preferred.

b. The source must have cylindrical symmetry

c. The source length must be in the range of 0.755 inches long to 0.795 inches long, exclusive of the threaded rod.

d. The source must be in the range of 0.303 inches in diameter to 0.307 inches in diameter

e. The source must have a 0.2 inch long 10-32 threaded rod on one end of the source, and shall have been produced by machining the threaded rod and outer section of the source encapsulation from a single piece of material

f. The source must be certified to meet Special Form Encapsulation requirements.

g. The source must be double-encapsulated or triple-encapsulated.

B. Accompanying Documentation

a. Special Form Encapsulation Certificate

b. Documentation of isotopic composition (and date of that composition) of Cf-252 material in atom percent, mass percent, or weight percent including at least Cf-252, Cf-250, and Cf-249.

c. Documentation of the amount of Curium-248 (Cm-248) contained in the source in micrograms. This may be provided as the date of separation of curium from californium and the date of determination of the mass of Cf-252 or neutron emission rate.
