About this file
This is a Requirements and Specifications document for a Laser Linewidth Characterization Suite procurement by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Physical Measurements Lab, Applied Physics Division, Quantum Nanophotonic group. NIST is soliciting two independent, manufacturer-new laser systems for optical testing and characterization of heterogeneous photonic integrated circuits with on-chip laser sources operating in the 400-1000 nm wavelength range, with specific emphasis on 780 nm and 980 nm bands. The primary application is frequency linewidth characterization of on-chip laser sources using optical heterodyne techniques, in addition to testing high-quality microring resonators for development of narrow linewidth integrated photonic mirrors, filters, and nonlinear photonic devices.
Item 1 requires a mode-hop free, widely tunable laser source at 980 nm with continuous tuning from 920-990 nm, fiber-coupled output to polarization-maintaining fiber with FC/APC connector, output power greater than 17 mW across the range with maximum power of 35 mW or greater, tuning speed of 10 nm/sec or larger, absolute wavelength accuracy less than 100 pm, optical linewidth less than 1 kHz instantaneous and less than 10 kHz integrated at 5 microseconds, dual-stage optical isolation greater than 60 dB, and all-digital control electronics with capability to lock and stabilize up to four external lasers using PDH-locking and Lock-In signal generation. Item 2 requires a mode-hop free, widely tunable laser source at 780 nm with continuous tuning from 750-790 nm, similar fiber-coupled and isolation requirements, output power greater than 14 mW across the range with maximum power greater than 20 mW, optical linewidth less than 0.5 kHz instantaneous and less than 10 kHz integrated at 5 microseconds, and comparable control electronics. Both systems must be electrically pumped diodes with mechanical motor step size of 0.3 pm or better, piezo-electric tuning ranges of 55 GHz and 60 GHz respectively, and minimum one-year manufacturer warranty or 3,000 operating hours. Delivery of goods, installation, and training must be completed no later than 30 weeks after receipt of order, with government acceptance testing planned for 14 business days following system setup and evaluation.

TITLE: Laser linewidth characterization suite Requesting Lab/Division/Group: Physical Measurements Lab/Applied Physics Division/Quantum Nanophotonic group (686.10) General Statement of Need Division 686 is involved in a series projects involving development of heterogeneous photonic integrated circuits with on-chip laser sources. Such photonic curcuits are developed for the wavelength range of 400-1000 nm with a specific interest in operation at 780 nm and 980nm wavewlength bands. Two narrow linewidth and widely (mode-hope free) tunable laser sources are needed for optical testing and characterization of the developed photonic circuits. Of special application is frequency linewidth characterization of the on-chip laser sources through a technique called “optical heterodyne”. In this technique the laser system purchased here is tuned to the same wavelength of the on-chip laser. The optical beams of the two lasers are mixed on a photodiode and the linewidth of the mixed signal is measured in the radio frequency domain to characterize the frequency noise performance of the on-chip photonic laser. Other applications are optical testing and characterization of high-quality microring resonators for development of narrow linewidth integrated photonic mirrors, filter, and nonlinear photonic devices. Laser system one is required to provide mode-hop free tuning in the wide tuning range of 750 nm – 790 nm. Laser system 2 is required to provide mode-hop free tuning in the wide tuning range of 920 nm – 990 nm. Both lasers are required to have fiber-coupled outputs to polarization maintaining fibers and intenral optical isolators with > 45 dB isolation over the entire operating bands to block back-reflections from entering the lasers’ cavity. We require two independent laser systems in “Manufacturer New” condition with two independent emission heads and separate electrical control units for each laser.
