STATEMENT OF REQUIREMENTS
Precision Wire Saw (PWS) Package
I. BACKGROUND INFORMATION
A benchtop diamond precision wire saw (PWS) is being requested in order to help develop a core materials science strategy of the NIST/ MML Strategic Plan (Ceramic Additive Manufacturing). Ceramic samples that are produced by 3D printing methods require proper sample prep to characterize microstructure using a host of microscopy or X-ray scattering techniques. Diamond wire or wire-lapping saws provide high accuracy cutting of brittle ceramic materials while minimizing loss of excess material during cutting and avoiding catastrophic damage like cracking. A goal of the group is to improve and advance ceramic AM metrology and ceramic AM standards development and improving our abilities to properly prepare cross-sectioned segments of ceramic specimens will greatly help us achieve our goals of relating microstructure and defects to ceramic 3D printing parameters. Improved sample preparation will facilitate fundamental measurements of ceramic additive manufacturing that will benefit ongoing research in the Materials Structure and Data Group and facilitate the success of deliverables related to NIST critical measurements.
II. SPECIFICATION
The contractor shall deliver a precision wire cutter saw package (package needs to include saw and required accessory parts). The equipment must be able to meet the following minimum specifications:
1) The PWS must be able to make precision cuts with diamond coated wire with a diameter in the range of 0.1-
0.3 mm.
2) The PWS must be a benchtop model with overall dimensions smaller than 5 cubic feet.
3) The PWS must be supplied with a 2-axis mounting stage (the stage must have a rotation and tilt axis) to adjust the position of the sample prior to sectioning.
4) The PWS must be supplied with a mounted optical microscope head to ensure accurate placement of cutting locations.
5) The PWS must be equipped with a digital control screen with digital control of the position of the sample stage.
6) The PWS must be capable of cutting through samples with dimensions of 50x50x50 mm.
7) The PWS must be delivered with all equipment to power and operate the saw. The PWS package must be supplied with consumables (5 spools of smallest diameter diamond wire).
8) An operations manual must be included, either electronic or hard copy.
Warranty:
The Contractor shall provide, at a minimum, a one-year warranty for the equipment. The warranty shall cover all parts, labor and travel. The warranty shall commence upon Government acceptance.
