About this file

This Statement of Requirements details the procurement of a high-temperature muffle furnace for the Materials Measurement Science Division at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The furnace must be a benchtop box-style model capable of reaching 1800°C in an oxidizing atmosphere, with specific technical requirements including a controller with eight programmable segments, a microprocessor with self-tuning PID control, a com port for external computer control, a specialized thermocouple (Pt20%Rh/Pt40%Rh), and SuperKanthal 1900 heating elements.

The solicitation is a 100% small business set-aside with a NAICS code of 333994, seeking one furnace and an operations manual within 60 days of award. The procurement will be awarded on a lowest-price, technically acceptable basis, with delivery to be made during normal business hours. The contractor must provide a one-year warranty covering all parts, labor, and travel, and the NIST Subject Matter Expert will test the deliverable within five calendar days of receipt, with the contractor required to make any necessary changes within three calendar days of receiving comments.

STATEMENT OF REQUIREMENTS

High Temperature Muffle Furnace

I. BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The Materials Measurement Science Division, Materials Structure and Data Group, is requesting a high temperature 1800 oC muffle (box-style) furnace. The lab’s focus area research in ceramic additive manufacturing requires post-processing of 3D printed ceramic parts to sinter the material and achieve high density. Dense structures improve the mechanical, electrical, and other important functional properties of the material, and certain materials that we process require high temperatures to achieve full density. The high temperature furnace we need for our project will be used to densify oxide materials in oxidizing (air) conditions, so a furnace is need with appropriate thermocouples and heating elements that can operate in these conditions.

II. SPECIFICATION

The contractor shall deliver a benchtop box or muffle style furnace. The equipment must be able to meet the following minimum requirements:

1) The furnace shall be operable to maximum temperature of 1800 oC in an oxidizing (air) atmosphere.

2) The furnace must come with a controller that has a minimum of eight programmable (ramp and dwell) segments.

3) The controller must be equipped with a microprocessor that can apply self-tuning PID control.

4) The controller must by of the type that has a com port installed in it so that the furnace can be controlled by an external computer (a computer does not need to be supplied by the manufacturer).

5) The furnace must be delivered pre-installed with a “Land-Jewell” type thermocouple with the composition: Pt20%Rh/Pt40%Rh.

6) The furnace must be delivered pre-installed with SuperKanthal 1900 rated or equivalent (SuperKanthal

1900 heating elements are rated for continuous use at 1800 oC in air) MoSi2 heating elements.

7) The internal chamber dimensions of the furnace must be in the range of 1 – 4 L.

8) The furnace must have a front-loading door.

9) The furnace must run on 110 – 240 V AC power.

10) An operations manual shall be included (paper or electronic is acceptable)

Warranty:

The Contractor shall provide, at a minimum, a one-year warranty for the equipment. The warranty shall cover all parts, labor and travel. The warranty shall commence upon successful completion of delivery and Government acceptance based on inspection of all required specifications.

III. DELIVERY

Delivery shall be FOB destination and shall take place during normal business hours, between 7:30 am and 4:00 pm Eastern Time, Monday through Friday except Federal Holidays, and shall be coordinated with the NIST Subject Matter Expert (SME).

IV. DELIVERABLES

Description Quantity Due Date

High Temperature Muffle Furnace One (1) Within 60 days after award

Operations manual One (1) Within 60 days after award

V. ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA

The NIST Subject Matter Expert (SME) will test the deliverable for compliance with specifications and interface with the NIST equipment within five (5) calendars days of receipt and provide any comments to the contractor. The contractor shall make any needed changes to the deliverables within three (3) calendar days from receipt of electronic or written comments from the SME.
