About this file

This is a Technical Specifications document for infrasound acoustic monitoring sensors required by the USGS Volcano Science Center for volcano monitoring purposes. All sensors must be delivered by September 30, 2026, and must be existing products currently in production with an established performance history; units modified or developed solely to meet these requirements are not acceptable.

The sensors must meet strict calibration and performance standards, with individual calibration within ±5% of nominal values traceable to a nationally accredited external laboratory. Signal characteristics require nominal sensitivity of 0.0275V/Pa@1Hz or greater and a full scale range of 720Pa peak-to-peak or greater, with differential output type and maximum signal output of 20VPP. Operational specifications include frequency response flat to within ±3dB from 0.02Hz to 240Hz or wider, band-limited self-noise of 5mPa RMS from 0.05 to 200Hz or less, and dynamic range of 110dB or greater. Power requirements specify a DC supply range of 11.5V to 18V or wider with reverse polarity protection and current consumption of 150mW or less. Physical characteristics limit sensors to 4 inches diameter or smaller and 3.5 inches tall or shorter, with minimum three acoustic entry points, operating temperature range of -40°C to +65°C, humidity tolerance of 90% or greater, and housing constructed of corrosion-resistant materials isolated from ground.
