GSB-88 SEALER BINDER
This work consists of furnishing all materials, equipment, labor and preparation necessary for an application of GSB-88.
GSB-88 Emulsified Sealer/Binder is a chemically engineered asphalt pavement sealer/binder comprised of a cationic emulsion of Gilsonite Ore, and specially selected plasticizers. This chemical colloid stabilized emulsion has been specifically formulated for sealing asphalt parking lots, city streets, county roads, airport taxiways, and airport parking aprons. GSB-88® provides a durable, yet flexible top coat, while special plasticizers and oils penetrate and rejuvenate asphalt pavements. The result is an emulsified sealer/binder that restores vital components to asphalt pavements lost during the aging and oxidation process. The gilsonite seal provides a long wearing anti-oxidative seal for the surface of the asphalt pavement. GSB-88® beautifies asphalt pavements by drying to an absolute black color.
The materials shall meet the following requirement;
GSB-88 Emulsified Sealer Binder
3. Equipment
All equipment required for performance of the work shall be approved before construction is to begin and shall be maintained in satisfactory operating condition. The Contractor shall furnish an accurate thermometer, hand brooms and other small tools and equipment essential for the completion of the work.
PRESSURE DISTRIBUTOR
The pressure distributor shall have a computerized rate control that automatically adjusts the distributor’s pump to the ground speed. The pressure distributor shall be capable of heating and re-circulating the bituminous binder to the specified temperature. The proper nozzles shall be used for the material and rate specified.
4. Pre-Paving On-Site Meeting
A meeting between the Contractor and city will be held at the project site prior to beginning work. The agenda for this meeting will include:
• Review of Contractor’s detailed work schedule
• Review of the traffic control plan
GSB-88 shall be places when the pavement and atmospheric temperature is 50°F and rising. Placement is not permitted if it is raining, when the pavement surface has standing water, or when temperatures are forecasted to be below 40°F within 24 hours of placement.
• Give the city a minimum two-week notice of start of work so that Road Work Ahead signs can be installed by the city crew.
• Preparation of the surface shall include removal of all vegetation, dirt and debris from the roadway. The surface will be cleaned by the City and shall be reasonably dry when the bituminous binder is applied.
• The chip seal shall be applied from edge of pavement to edge of pavement. The edges of the limits of the chip seal application on both sides of the road shall be maintained in a neat and uniform line.
• The specified aggregate shall be spread uniformly onto the bituminous binder prior to the emulsion breaking and as agreed to by the city & contractor in field.
• Permanent pavement marking will be removed prior to applying GSB-88 by water blasting or scarifying.
• GSB-88 shall be applied from edge of pavement to edge of pavement. The edges of the limits of the application on both sides of the road shall be maintained in a neat and uniform line.
Dilution:
GSB-88® Concentrate must be diluted with heated water prior to application to asphalt pavements. Always add water to the concentrate emulsion; never add concentrate emulsion to the water. Two dilution rates are recommended as follows:
• 2 parts GSB-88® to 1 part water for use on hills where run off may be of concern, or on very rough surface textured pavements.
• 1 part GSB-88® to 1 part water for most applications is recommended.
Rate of Spread:
Rate of spread is normally determined by the texture, porosity, and age of the asphalt pavement to be sealed.
Application rate can vary from 0.08 to 0.15 gallons per square yard.
• For 2:1 dilution 0.08 to 0.12 gallons per square yard is recommended.
• For 1: 1 dilution 0.10 to 0.15 gallons per square yard is recommended.
Cure Time:
Under normal conditions, cure time for GSB-88® is 2 to 8 hours. Sheltered or shady areas may require longer cure times.
Application Precautions:
GSB-88® should not be applied to wet or damp pavement surfaces. Do not apply during rainy or damp weather, or when rain is anticipated within 8 hours after application is completed. Pavement surface temperatures should be 65°F (18°C) and rising before application of GSB-88® is initiated. At least three hours of daylight should remain after completion of the application. Material temperature will be applied at 130oF or above, but not to exceed 160oF during application.
GSB-88® should not be applied on extremely windy days.
Preparation of Pavement Surfaces:
Repair and patch all major pavement defects. All cracks, other than hairline cracks, should be filled with a suitable bituminous crack-filler. Scrape all oil spots to remove excess oil and dirt. Just before applying GSB-88® clean the asphalt surface of all loose dust, dirt, and other debris.
If the Contractor’s test results exceed any of the identified quality control tolerances, the city shall be immediately notified. The city will review the explanation and the corrective action taken by the Contractor. Another test will be taken and if the results still exceed the quality control tolerance, placement shall stop. The Contractor shall immediately notify the city and identify the cause of the excessive deviation and detail corrective action necessary to bring the deficiency into compliance. The city will give approval prior to resuming work.
BITUMINOUS BINDER
The application rate shall not exceed a tolerance of +/-0.03 gallons per square yard from the specified rate, and within the temperature range as specified.
10. Method of Measurement
The GSB-88 emulsified sealer/binder will be measured by the square yard as provided for in the Contract Documents.
The accepted quantities, measured as provided for above, will be paid for at the contract unit price for fog seal.
11. Basis of Payment GSB-88 shall be paid for per square yard for furnishing all preparation, materials, equipment, labor, clean-up and incidentals necessary to complete the work as specified.
