About this file
This document is a Request for Information (RFI) for a state and local contract opportunity issued by CAL Fire. The contract requires the installation of a new metal roof and siding for the Equipment Shop and Supply Warehouse. The scope mentions underlayment, rigid insulation, and metal deck to be installed, but a previous attempt using this design was unsuccessful due to structural issues. The alternative is to install rolled insulation and standard roofing panels. The basis of design is Taylor Metals Versa-Span 16" panel, 22-gauge for the roof, and Contour C-3 panels, 22-gauge for the wall panels. The work is to be performed by the prime general contractor, California Constructors. The contract requires venting for the new standing seam roof, engineering calculations, and a manufacturer weathertight warranty. The existing metal siding profile may be changed, and all windows and frames are to be replaced, while the existing shade structures will be removed and not replaced.
The contract opportunity covers several jurisdictions in California, including Lake Riverside CDP, San Bernardino County, Orange Blossom CDP, Inyokern CDP, Orange County, Orange City, Orange Cove City, Inyo County, Kern County, Riverside County, Kernville CDP, Riverside City, San Bernardino City, and Orangevale CDP.

Request For Information (RFI)
RFI-Questions Due 04/18/2024
Contractor-
Scope mentions underlayment, rigid insulation, and metal deck to be installed. It was mentioned at the job walk by a CAL Fire staff member that the prefabricated building might not meet the engineering requirements to install this system and the alternative to install roll insulation instead. (delete ridge insulation & metal decking)
Program Response –
Correct, a previous attempt at utilizing this design recently (within the last several weeks) failed due to existing “Z” girts not being structurally sound enough to accept the pan-decking anchoring hardware. I accepted a change to rolled insulation and standard roofing panels as an alternative. It would be appropriate to do this up front in this phase of the contract process.
Contractor-
Could you please confirm that Taylor metals is the basis of design as mentioned per the walk and the Versa span 16" panel 24 gauge for the roof and Contour C-3 panels 24 gauge for the wall panels are to be used for bidding purposes.
Program Response –
Correct, with the exception that the panel gauge should be 22-gauge.
1. Please confirm decking and insolation to be installed by prime G/C which means California Constructors.
a. Correct, all work requested in the contract is the responsibility of the awarded contractor
2. Will venting be required on the new standing seam?
a. Yes
3. What is the gauge and width of the standing seam?
a. The gauge requirements are in the specifications
4. Will a manufacturer weathertight warranty be required?
a. Yes
5. Will engineering calc's be required?
a. Yes
6. Are we to match the existing metal siding or will a different profile be required?
a. No, CALFIRE will select a new profile from Taylor metals or metal supplier used by awarded contractor
7. Will any windows, doors, or equipment be removed and replaced?
a. Please include the replacement of all windows and frames
8. Will existing shade structures be removed and replaced?
a. Removed, yes; replaced, no
9. Will the walls require a solid substrate?
a. No, only the insulation
