About this file
This Request for Information (RFI) W50S81-25-Q-A013 seeks clarification on specifications for power converters compatible with F-15 and F-35 aircraft. Key details include a requirement for a 70-foot 270-VDC cable with a motorized reel for feed and retrieval, to be floor mounted near the converter with ample space. The power converter will be located a few feet from the wall, with an input cable connecting to a wall-mounted box, and no specific mating plug is needed. The system is designed for 4th and 5th generation fighters, focusing solely on 270 VDC power requirements, with no 400 Hz cable or reel necessary.
The document consists of ten questions and responses addressing technical specifics such as mounting options, cable lengths, power compatibility, and installation requirements. Notably, the responses emphasize flexibility in installation (floor mounting preferred), compatibility across multiple aircraft platforms, and a preference for motorized cable retrieval. The RFI indicates the government is seeking detailed technical clarifications to refine the procurement specifications for the power converter system, with a focus on precise operational parameters and installation considerations.

W50S81-25-Q-A013 – Power Converters
Q1. The product description appears to indicate you only want a 70-foot 270-VDC cable and cable reel. Please confirm you do not need a 400 HZ cable and reel. If a 400 HZ reel and cable is needed, please define the length.
400 HZ cable and reel is not required. The intent is to purchase a power converter that is compatible with 4th and 5th gen fighters but only 270 VDC is needed.
Q2. If it is a motorized reel, is it for motorized feed and retrieval or manual feed and motorized retrieval?
Motorized feed and retrieval would be preferred.
Q3. If it is a rack, is it mounted on the 270vdc power supply or is it wall mounted or floor mounted?
Floor mounted near to the converter would be ideal as there is ample space.
Q4. The Power Converters description is confusing it states that it requires a “Stand for Fixed Mount (18” clearance) and a four-conductor input cable. If it is “fixed mount” it should be hard wired in rather than require in input cable be provided.
The Converters will be located a few feet from the wall. The input cable will connect the converter to the wall .
Q5. What is the full load amps rating for the 400 hertz OUTPUT 1?
See the answer to Q1.
Q6. Supplies/Service description states, “Motorized Aircraft Cable Reel/Rack”. Which requirement is needed? A motorized reel or a cable rack?
A motorized reel to store the 70’ cable.
Q7. What is meant by “dual compatible with the F-35 and F-15 aircraft?
The system can be utilized on both F-15 and F-35 aircraft.
Q8. Is there a requirement to provide a 400 hertz AC power cord and if yes then what length and what type description? *Description states 70’ 270 volt dc power cord then states description for 20’ input power cord.
See the answer to Q1.
Q9. What is the required output rating of the 400 hertz, 3-phase, 4-wire OUTPUT 1?
a. Rating is not described in the salient characteristics.
See the answer to Q1.
b. This would be a measurement of full load amps, kva @ 0.8 power factor, or kw @ unity power factor.
See the answer to Q1.
Q10. Does the input power cord require a specific mating plug be provided?
The input cord will be hard wired in a box on the wall. No mating plug is needed.
