Revision 01
1.0 GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK TO BE PERFORMED
Applicable Technical Areas from BAA 08-RD-01:
Technical Area 4 – Theoretical and Computational R&D
The scope includes theoretical analysis and computational modeling and simulation of High Power Electromagnetic (HPEM) systems and their associated components to include microwave or millimeter wave sources, pulsed power technologies, pulsed power driven loads for the production of high energy density plasma (HEDP) and near plasma environments, with and without embedded high magnetic fields, and radiation transport.
The scope includes applying the necessary computational tools to support the development of HPEM weapons/systems at the appropriate technical level. For example, a computational method may be required to address basic physics within a high power microwave source (such as particle-in-cell codes), or multiphysics software such as COMSOL to investigate propagation of RF waves and interactions with other systems or materials.
The Pulsed Power Branch solves multiphysics problems to include plasma physics, electromagnetic, hydrodynamics, radiation/particle transport and quantum mechanics.
Examples of codes currently used in the branch include MACH2/3, ALEGRA, ICEPIC, TMAX, Geant 4, WARPX, NIMROD, CALE, CAGEN, COMSOL, and ABINIT.
2.0 OBJECTIVES OF WORK TO BE PERFORMED

• Develop/apply computational models to examine large amounts of data extracted from diagnostic equipment used during HPEM experiments.
3.0 BACKGROUND INFORMATION
This technical area seeks to advance technologies that will enable HPEM systems and pulsed power driven HEDP applications and experiments. Past efforts have enabled solutions to HPEM sources, rep-rate and single shot pulsed power systems, HEDP current delivery, instability growth, and flux capture, among others.
4.0 POSSIBLE KNOWN CONSTRAINTS

Block 7: Normally, only a letter of transmittal is required. However, a DD 250Z shall accompany the closeout PSR.
Block 10, 12 and 13: Individual task orders will specify the exact frequency, such as monthly or quarterly, of the Periodic Status Report (PSR). The first PSR is due within 20 calendar days after the end of the first full calendar month after date of approval (DOA), with subsequent submissions due within 20 calendar days of the first day of each period (individual task orders will specify the exact period, such as month or quarter) for the duration of the contract. A final technical PSR showing just technical effort status is due within 20 calendar days of the task order’s technical completion date. A final cost PSR showing just cost status is due within 20 calendar days following the end of the month in which the task order’s technical completion date occurs. A closeout PSR showing final cost status is due within 20 calendar days after the first full month after the contractor has submitted the final version of the final report. For the Combined Functions Task Order and any other task order(s) not requiring a final Scientific and Technical Report, the Closeout PSR is due 120 days after the end of period of performance of the task order. Test Reports may be required at a greater frequency, as specified in a PCO approved TO. Quick Look Reports will be generated within five working days of each test. Contractor's format is acceptable. Meeting Minutes, or Conferences…, as required by the TOO, provided the requirement is presented in writing prior to the event. Said report will be generated within 10 working days after the event. If a Test Report, Quick Look Report, or Meeting Minutes… are called out as a separate document in a PCO approved TO, then said data does not need to be repeated in the PSR. Rather, a single statement in the PSR shall be made reflecting delivery of the item(s) to the appropriate
TOO.
Block 14: In addition to scheduled hard copies, a single soft copy (CD, or Zip Disk) of each PSR, for each PCO approved TO, will be delivered via U.S. Postal Service (not emailed) or hand delivered to the COR. This is not to include any additional Test Reports or Quick Look Reports, which are required outside of the periodic Status Report cycle. The format will be in an industry standard, commercially available, office desktop format compatible with WIN 2000/XP PCs.
Electronic versions must be submitted in a manner consistent with protecting export control and limited information.
