Technical Area 4 – Theoretical and Computational R&D
Task Order Statement Pulsed Power High Energy Density Physics Theoretical and Computational Efforts
12 Mar 2008
1.0 OBJECTIVE AND SCOPE
1.1 Objective: The objective of this task order is to enable technologies for pulsed power high energy density physics development efforts within the Technical Area 4: Theoretical and Computational R&D.
1.2 Scope: The scope of work conducted under this task order includes theoretical analysis and computational modeling of pulsed power driven loads for the production of high energy density plasma and near-plasma environments with and without embedded high magnetic fields, and explosively driven pulsed power components such as fuses and magnetic flux compression generators. It includes code development, if needed. It includes theoretical analysis and computational simulation to support development of pulsed intense neutron sources, including magnetized plasma formation and compression. The scope also includes code development efforts necessary to model those loads and components and associated phenomena. In addition, the scope includes presentations and attendance at conferences relevant to work hereunder. It also includes follow-on cost and schedule plans, design review, and technical interchange meetings. It includes comparison of simulations with experimental results for code and model validation.
2.0 BACKGROUND: The Technical Area listed above seeks to advance technologies that will enable applications centered on the use of pulsed power systems. The goals are to develop solutions that are lightweight, packageable, technically viable, and offer military advantages to the user. These programs are developing potential designs and hardware for primarily single shot systems. The pulsed power subsystems for these designs are at various stages of technology readiness and need either further assessment or advancement.
3.0 APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS: Security Classification Guide (SCG) for High Power Microwave (HPM) Weapon / Counter High Power Microwave (CHPM) Weapon Technology – 21 June 1999. All applicable health, safety, and environmental regulations.
4.0 TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS/TASKS:
4.1 The contractor shall develop integrated two-dimensional Magneto-Hydro-Dynamic (MHD) simulations of the formation of a field-reversed configuration (FRC) magnetized deuterium plasma and its compression by a deformable-contact solid metal liner implosion (that could be driven by magnetic pressure from AFRL/RD Shiva Star 10 to 15 megamp range discharges). This will include use of realistic guide and mirror magnetic fields in the FRC translation region and inside the liner.
4.2 The contractor shall develop integrated two-dimensional MHD simulations of the formation, insertion, and compression of wall (i.e., liner) confined azimuthal field magnetized plasma, compressed by magnetic pressure driven imploding liners.
4.3 The contractor shall develop two-dimensional r- simulations of deformable contact liner compression of an axially-symmetric equivalent field-reversed configuration magnetized plasma to assess the Rayleigh-Taylor instability in this plane.
4.4 The contractor shall develop and use three dimensional MHD simulations to address three dimensional issues of FRC compression, including the use of slotted return conductors.
4.5 The contractor shall develop integrated two-dimensional MHD simulations of the formation of a high speed flow magnetized plasma and its compression by a deformable-contact solid metal liner implosion (that could be driven by magnetic pressure from AFRL/RD Shiva Star 10 to 15 megamp range discharges and by hypothetical 100 megamp range discharges). This will include simulating the use of high capacity deuterium gas puff and/or plasma injection into the formation region.
4.6 The contractor shall develop integrated two-dimensional MHD simulations of high current, high capacity deuterium gas puff and/or plasma injection variants of the Dense Plasma Focus, that could be driven by AFRL/RD Shiva Star 10 to 15 megamp range discharges and by hypothetical 100 megamp range discharges.
4.7 The contractor shall develop multidimensional MHD simulations of magnetic flux compression generator physics such as the stator/armature contact, stator deformation, flux trapping, and turn shorting to develop scaling laws and lumped parameter models for contact resistance, generator inductance, etc.
4.8 AFRL computational and theoretical scientists will be available for consult on developing multidimensional models of high energy density pulsed power loads and components.
4.9 The contractor will provide AFRL experimental physicists with timely and relevant computational modeling as they continue to field high energy density pulsed power loads and components. The contractor shall perform multidimensional MHD code modeling of various features of these loads and components to continually validate and expand the experimentalists’ interpretation and understanding of the experimental data.
4.10 The contractor shall determine if physics requires the use of extended MHD or hybrid simulation models.
