Technical Area 4 – Theoretical and Computational R&D
Task Order Statement
High Power Microwave System Modeling Computational Infrastructure and Data Handling 10 Mar 2008
1.0 OBJECTIVE AND SCOPE
1.1 Objective: The objective of this task order is to develop technologies for end to end (pulsed power through to battlefield effect) HPM modeling, which falls under the Theoretical and Computational R&D Technical Area.
1.2 Scope: The scope of work conducted under this task order includes theoretical analysis and integrated computational modeling of all aspects of HPM system operation, from behavior of pulsed power, source physics and engineering, antenna and radiation, platform EMI/EMC, propagation, target interaction and target effect; and the interaction of all the previous with each other as components of a complete HPM system. Code development will focus on integrating existing system component modeling tools such as ICEPIC, RF ProTEC, TMAX, and CARLOS into a suite of modeling tools which will aid in the design, modeling, simulation, visualization, and evaluation of complete HPM systems. Integration tasks include creation of interfaces between system component modeling tools so that they can exchange data, and GUI creation for usability. Also included are theoretical analysis and experimental verification and validation of code suite results and archival/retrieval of previous simulation results to that the effect of design changes can be assessed accurately. The scope also includes cost and schedule plans, design review, and technical interchange meetings.
2.0 BACKGROUND: The Technical Area listed above seeks to advance technologies that will enable applications centered on the production of tools for integrated HPM system modeling. The end goal is to provide tools to acquisition professionals and HPM system manufacturers for design, modeling and simulation, and assessment.
3.0 APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS: Security Classification Guide (SCG) for High Power Microwave (HPM) Weapon / Counter High Power Microwave (CHPM) Weapon Technology – 21 June 1999. All applicable health, safety, and environmental regulations.
4.0 TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS/TASKS:
4.1 Integration/Interoperability with Government efforts. Contractor effort will be integrated into a larger Government effort, for which the Government will be responsible. The general architecture and most of the system component modeling tools will be Government provided. Because of interoperability requirements, 50% or more of all work performed by contractors for this task shall be done using Government facilities in close collaboration with Government personnel. The project itself will reside in source code form with the Government at Government facilities.
4.2 Integration Infrastructure. A complete HPM system design will require the integrated use of many separately developed system component simulation models, such as ICEPIC for modeling HPM sources and SPICE for modeling pulsed power. As part of the goal of being able to model an integrated HPM system from pulsed power through to battlefield effect, create an infrastructure which can transition design information into the inputs required for the various component models and convey outputs from component models to be inputs for other component models. For example, power, mode, frequency output from ICEPIC as input to CARLOS, and antenna reflection coefficient as output from CARLOS as input for ICEPIC. While a specific set of component models will be the initial target of development, the resulting infrastructure needs to be well documented and flexible so that new component models may be integrated later.
4.3 Verification/Validation. Of key importance to the project is credibility of results. Therefore, verification and validation of integrated HPM system model results with experimental results shall be performed. Further, individual system component models will be regularly tested during development to ensure that errors have not been introduced and that model results are accurate when compared with experiment and theory.
4.4 Databasing/Archival of simulation results. Simulation results shall be archived so that they can be retrieved for comparisons of simulated system performance, verification that similar answers are obtained for identical inputs, and as initial starting data for any required iteration between system component models. The automatic generation of the reduced physics models (POD, PCA, etc) is also included in this task.
4.5 GUI development and Visualization. With the ultimate goal of allowing non-experts to use the integrated HPM system model to assess HPM system performance for specific designs, the Contractor shall assist in the development of a Graphical User Interface, and in providing visualizations of HPM system model results.
4.6 CAD model importation/integration. Most HPM system designs will originate in the form of CAD models of the system geometry. The Contractor shall integrate the CAD model importation into the HPM system model and into the HPM system component models as necessary.
