CALL 0001
Attachment 4 High energy Research and applications (HERA)
Technical Area 2 – Pulsed Power and Pulsed Power Systems R&D Technical Area 3 – Prime Power Systems
Sample Task Order Statement HPM/PP Sources and Power Delivery Systems R&D 12 Feb 2008
1.0 Objective and scope:
1.1 Objective: The objective of this task order is to investigate the strengths and weaknesses of enabling repetitive nanosecond timescale opening switch technology coupled to inductive storage elements through modeling, simulation, and experiment and to develop and to implement improvements to the state of the art for staged flux compression generators, sources of intense x-rays, and magnetized plasma compression experiments.
1.2 Scope: The scope of work conducted under this task order will include a modeling and simulation effort to assess the performance of the subject components and pulse power based systems. The scope includes necessary design, development, engineering, fabrication, assembly, analysis, experiment and testing of these components and systems. In addition, scope will include follow-on cost and schedule plans, design reviews, and technical interchange meetings.
2.0 Background: The Pulse Power Technical Area of the High Power Microwave High Power Systems Branch, (a branch of the High Power Microwave Division of AFRL’s Directed Energy Directorate), seeks to advance the state of the art of pulse power systems, applications of pulse power and component technologies and to develop enabling component technologies that will enable robust, high power, low mass, deployable pulse power based systems.
3.0 Applicable Documents: Security Classification Guide (SCG) for High Power Microwave (HPM) Weapon / Counter High Power Microwave (CHPM) Weapon Technology – 21 June 1999. All applicable health, safety and environmental regulations.
4.0 Technical Requirements/Tasks:
4.1 Staged flux compression generators: Perform engineering and scientific research to develop and implement an experiment series in which explosive flux compression generators (FCGs) are staged to amplify a 10 kiloamp initial current to put 100 megamps into a 20 nanoHenry load, with a current rise time ~ 10 microseconds. Desired features are compact size, simplicity, and reliability. Another desirable feature is self contained prime power. One suggested approach is to use flux trapping connections. Consider this and alternate approaches. The goal is to achieve performance as close to that described above, in 2 years, and to understand the scaling and technical paths to higher performance and more compact devices. (CDRLs: A003, A004, A005, A006, A007, A008)
4.2 Repetitive Opening Switch Coupled to Inductive Storage Element: The contractor shall pursue the research and development of such opening switches and use them on an inductive store – narrow band microwave load system for feasibility tests. The objective of Phase I will be to experimentally and theoretically assess the feasibility of the opening switch under the proposed conditions and the final phase will be to perform the research necessary to develop the best switches possible that meet specified performance objectives (pulsed power appropriate to drive 0.1 to 1 Gigawatt, ~ Gigahertz wavelength, ~ 50 to 100 nanosecond range NB source for several pulses at either 0.1 to 1 KHz or 0.1 to 1 MHz range repetition rate) in less than 2 years. That is, propose either a 0.1 to 1 KHz or a 0.1 to 1 MHz range scheme. (CDRLs: A003, A004, A005, A006, A007, A008)
4.3 Compact X-ray source: Develop, design, construct, and test a very compact source of >100 KeV X-rays, with source strength of approximately 1 Joule, source size less than 1 mm in diameter, driver size approximately 2 m length by 0.5 m diameter, with a (single) pulse duration less than 50 nanoseconds in duration. Develop a system for achieving this objective, keeping in mind that the mechanism used is not critical, though Bremsstrahlung is an obvious candidate. Simplicity, robustness, and reliability are preferred design goals. Trigger jitter should be less than 50 nanoseconds. The system should be self contained, including having its own prime power. The goal is to implement a device that comes as close as feasible to meeting this objective in less than 1 year. (CDRLs: A003, A004, A005, A006, A007, A008)
4.4 Magnetized Plasma Compression Experiments: Perform engineering and scientific research to develop and implement a magnetized plasma compression experiment, in which a high speed magnetized deuterium plasma is formed and injected into the interior of a quasi-cylindrical metal shell (liner), and subsequently compressed by liner implosion. This should use a several megajoule capacitor discharge. The magnetized plasma parameters, prior to compression, should be approximately ~1016 ions/cc, > KeV temperature, a greater than 2 Tesla field, approximately 100 cc volume, species deuterium. A possible formation technique is to imitate the Plasma Flow Switch scheme. The recommended compression technique is by metal shell implosion, where the metal shell is imploded by magnetic pressure from a high current discharge. Important features of this effort, besides achieving the pre-compression plasma parameters, are the diagnostics. It is important to be able to measure the implosion compression ratio, presence or absence of instability growth, pre-compressed and compressed plasma density and temperature and purity. The compression time needs to be on the order of 10 microseconds or faster. The ability to reliably implement the compression scheme hardware and operation is critical. (CDRLs: A003, A004, A005, A006, A007, A008)
