Technical Area 4 – Theoretical and Computational R&D
Task Order Statement
High Power Microwave System Theoretical and Computational Modeling
10 Mar 2008
1.0 OBJECTIVE AND SCOPE
1.1 Objective: The objective of this task order is to provide theoretical and computational models of the MACE/MEGA HPM system. Work will include creation, validation, verification and some optimization of an integrated end-to-end HPM system simulation model of the MACE/MEGA HPM system, which falls under the Theoretical and Computational R&D Technical Area.
1.2 Scope: The scope of work conducted under this task order includes theoretical analysis and integrated computational modeling of all aspects of HPM system operation, from behavior of pulsed power, source physics and engineering, antenna and radiation, platform EMI/EMC, propagation, target interaction and target effect; and the interaction of all the previous with each other as components of a complete HPM system. Also included are validation and verification of simulated results vs. experimental data to provide credibility. The scope also includes cost and schedule plans, design review, and technical interchange meetings.
2.0 BACKGROUND: The Technical Area listed above seeks to advance technologies that will enable applications centered on the production of tools for integrated HPM system modeling. The end goal is to provide tools to acquisition professionals and HPM system manufacturers for design, modeling and simulation, and assessment.
3.0 APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS: Security Classification Guide (SCG) for High Power Microwave (HPM) Weapon / Counter High Power Microwave (CHPM) Weapon Technology – 21 June 1999. All applicable health, safety, and environmental regulations.
4.0 TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS/TASKS:
4.1 Integration with Government effort. Because of security and interoperability requirements of this project, 75% or more of all work performed by contractors for this task shall be done using Government facilities in close collaboration with Government personnel. The project itself will reside with the Government at Government facilities.
4.2 Security Clearance. Contractors participating in the project will be expected to maintain at least a Secret US DoD security clearance.
4.3 HPM source modeling. The MACE/MEGA ICEPIC source model will be updated to better match experimental results and the model’s flexibility enhanced to better meet new requirements. Simulations with the new model will be carried out for testing and benchmarking vs. experimental data, and to predict behavior of possible HPM system designs.
4.4 Verification/Validation. Of key importance to the project is credibility of results. Therefore, verification and validation of integrated HPM system model results with experimental results shall be performed. Further, individual system component models will be regularly tested during development to ensure that errors have not been introduced and that model results are accurate when compared with experiment and theory.
4.5 Optimization. Automated optimization tools have been applied with specific system component models to greatly improve component performance. Apply automated optimization techniques to improve integrated HPM performance within given constraints.
4.6 Databasing/Archival of simulation results. Integrated HPM system simulations will be enormously expensive computationally, and will also require significant time-to-result. Therefore, results shall be archived so that they can be retrieved for comparisons of simulated system performance, verification that similar answers are obtained for identical inputs, and as initial starting data for any required iteration between system component models.
