About this file
This is a Real ID requirements notice issued by the Department of Homeland Security and Transportation Security Administration, applicable to federal agencies and contractors requiring access to federal facilities. Effective May 7, 2025, federal agencies, including DHS and TSA, will only accept state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards that are REAL ID-compliant, identified by a star marking on the upper portion of the card, for accessing federal facilities and TSA airport security checkpoints. Enhanced Driver's Licenses (EDLs) issued by Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, and Vermont are acceptable alternatives and do not require the star marking. Any individual seeking access to a Massachusetts National Guard facility without proper REAL ID identification will be denied access. The requirement applies to all individuals 18 years and older planning to fly domestically or visit certain federal facilities.
The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005 as H.R. 418, implements the 9/11 Commission's recommendation to establish federal standards for identification document issuance and production. The Act establishes minimum security standards for license issuance and prohibits federal agencies from accepting noncompliant driver's licenses and identification cards for official purposes. Secure driver's licenses and identification documents are recognized as vital to the national security framework. The Act's prohibitions apply only to official purposes as defined in the legislation and do not affect other uses of driver's licenses or identification cards unrelated to federal official purposes.

ATTENTION CONTRACTORS:
Effective 7 May, 2025: Federal agencies, including DHS and TSA, may only accept state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards as identification for purposes of accessing federal facilities - including TSA airport security checkpoints - if the license or card was issued by a REAL ID compliant state in accordance with the REAL ID security standards (meaning the license or card must include the REAL ID compliant star marking).
REAL ID-compliant cards will have of one of the following markings on the upper top portion of the card. If the card does not have one of these markings, it is not REAL ID-compliant and won’t be accepted as proof of identity in order to board commercial aircraft.
Examples of Real ID’s are included at the conclusion of this document
Enhanced Driver’s Licenses (EDL) issued by Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, and Vermont are considered acceptable alternatives to REAL ID-compliant cards and will also be accepted for official REAL ID purposes. Most EDLs do not contain the star marking and this is acceptable.
Any individual seeking access to a MA National Guard facility without a Real ID will be denied access.
