About this file

This document is a Statement of Objectives outlining the salient characteristics for a Rapid Runway system. The system is a modular, rigid interlocking panel configuration designed to create temporary operational aircraft surfaces. The system must comprise 60 individual panels, each nominally measuring 2 meters in length, 1 meter in width, and 20 millimeters in thickness. The panels assemble piece-by-piece to form a continuous, stable operational surface capable of supporting gross aircraft weights up to 400,000 pounds, accommodating both high tire-pressure fighter aircraft (F-35, F-16) and heavy cargo aircraft such as the C-17.

The system must be deployable over weak and varied subgrades—including dirt, mud, sand, and marshlands—without compromising structural integrity. The interlocking mechanism must resist torque from tight aircraft turns and prevent the upward migration of mud, water, or sand through the seams under heavy loads. Additionally, the system must demonstrate environmental and chemical resistance, withstanding exposure to standard aviation fuels, hydraulic fluids, and lubricants while remaining fully operational across extreme ambient temperature ranges.

Rapid Runway Salient Characteristics

The Rapid Runway system must meet the following minimum salient characteristics:

• Load Bearing Capacity: Must support gross aircraft weights of up to 400,000 lbs, accommodating high tire-pressure fighter aircraft (F-35, F-16) and heavy cargo aircraft (e.g., C-17).

• System Configuration: Must consist of rigid, interlocking panels that assemble piece-by-piece to create a continuous, stable operational surface.

• Panel Dimensions: Individual interlocking panels must nominally measure 2 meters (length) by 1 meter (width) by 20 millimeters (thickness), for a total of 60 panels.

• Subgrade Compatibility: Must be capable of deployment over weak and varied subgrades, including dirt, mud, sand, and marshlands, without compromising structural integrity.

• Joint Integrity: The interlocking mechanism must resist torque from tight aircraft turns and prevent the upward migration of mud, water, or sand through the seams under heavy loads.

• Environmental & Chemical Resistance: Must withstand exposure to standard aviation fuels, hydraulic fluids, and lubricants, while remaining fully operational in extreme ambient temperatures.
