STATEMENT OF WORK FORMAT

LEMS IMLI (Integrated Multi-Layer Insulation) - 09/07/2021

PR: _____________________

Note: Only use the sections that are applicable to your service procurement.

Background The Lunar Environment Monitoring Station (LEMS) is an instrument concept funded by NASA’s Development of Advanced Lunar Instrumentation Program, and undergoing maturation at the Goddard Space Flight Center’s Planetary Environment Laboratory (PEL). LEMS is a compact, autonomous, and self-sustaining instrument package that will enable the long-term, in-situ, monitoring of the lunar exosphere. To validate the thermal performance of the LEMS design, a thermal model will be constructed in order to replicate all mechanical interfaces, their thermal coupling and their leaks.

The LEMS team is baselining Quest’s Integrated Multi-Layer (IMLI) insulation for LEMS in place of conventional netting, soft blanket MLI. The IMLI is being used to achieve a higher thermal performance (e* < 0.005, with a goal ~ 0.001) with a lower mass burden than conventional MLI.

Scope The contractor shall provide engineering service to fabricate, deliver and integrate the IMLI blankets of LEMS based on a prototype built by Quest and tested in Aug 2020.

In order to construct the LEMS thermal model, Quest will:

1- Provide a preliminary IMLI design for LEMS 2- Create a mechanical CAD design for the IMLI attached to the spacecraft bus and exterior frame, 3- Perform a thermal and structural analysis of the system to validate it can meet the thermal and mechanical goals 4- Fabricate the IMLI 5- Assemble the IMLI on a the LEMS bus at GSFC.

6- Provide minimal support to the thermal balance test of LEMS as needed

Requirements The design of the IMLI should be compliant to the requirements listed on the ICD that will be delivered at the initiation of the order.
