SEALING COMPOUND:
DESCRIPTION
A general purpose, non-curing, putty-type material for vibration damping or sealing of forced air ducting, cabling, or piping penetration spools against leakage of air, moisture, dust, and noise. The product shall meet the requirements as listed below.
1. Contents: The sealing compound shall not contain any form of asbestos as an added product ingredient. Incidental background asbestos shall be less than 1% by the "point counting" method described in the following test method.
TEST METHOD: Positive asbestos fiber identification and quantitation shall be in accordance with optical methods per para. 1.7.2.2 and 1.7.2.3, respectively, of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and U. S. Environmental Protection Agency test method described in Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 40, Chapter 1, (1-1-87 edition), Part 763, Subpart F, Appendix A and pages 293-299 or later edition, if issued. Sample preparation and analysis interference shall be in accordance with practices described in paragraph 1.7.2.2. Note: keep muffle furnace temperature at 500 degrees C or lower to prevent changes to the refractive index(s).
2. * ADHESION TO SHEET METAL: The sealant shall show no more than 10% adhesion failure when sheet metal sandwiches of sealant are pulled apart in accordance with the following procedure. Cut six flat 3" x 3" aluminum and hot-galvanized sheet metal specimens from any thickness gauge sheets which are normally used to form HVAC ductwork. Degrease both surfaces of each sheet metal specimen and allow to dry. Prepare three each sandwiches of aluminum and galvanized sheet metal. Place sufficient sealing compound between the sheet metal coupons to yield between a 1/8 inch and 1/4 inch thick compression of sealant when the lamination is pressed between two pressure platens of choice to the tester. Bench-top age all specimens overnight between 65-75 degrees F. Hold all test specimens @ 73 +/- 2 degrees F for a minimum of 2 hours before testing. By hand, separate the sheet metal coupons from the sealant by peeling action from any corner. No specimens shall show more than 10% adhesion failure (bare metal) based on a total of 18 square inches of total face-to-face sheet metal contact area or the sealant fails. When visual estimation of the surface area failure is questionable, the tester shall use a calibrated planimeter.
3. NON-CURING: The sealing compound shall be non-curing.
TEST METHOD: Prepare a test specimen of sealing compound 3" x 3" x 1/8" (in.) thick on a sheet of glass. Place the prepared specimen flat in a forced-draft oven @ 180 degrees F for 24 hours. Remove and cool to ambient room temperature. The surface and thickness of subject sample shall exhibit a molding clay plasticity, with no surface crusting, crumbling, or cracking when a pencil point is drawn firmly across the specimen surface.
4. * WORKABILITY: The sealing compound shall have a consistency for working by a spatula or putty knife tools.
TEST METHOD: Against any 90 degree angle shape, lay a convex fillet of sealing compound, 1/2" (radius) x 6" (long). If the sealing compound lacks this workability, it does not comply and fails.
5. NON-ODOROUS: A panel of three individuals shall judge that no objectionable odor generates from the sealing compound.
TEST METHOD: Prepare a 3 inch diameter by 1/4 inch thick portion of sealing compound on a flat glass sheet. Age the prepared specimen horizontally in a convection oven for 12 hours at 110 +/ 2 degrees F. A panel of three individuals (from outside the laboratory area) shall sniff above the exhaust port of the oven and shall individually report no discernible odor (either pleasant or unpleasant). If the teat fails, select another panel of individuals and repeat the test. If the test fails a second time, the sample fails and does not comply.
6. FREEZE STABILITY: Material shall show no visible signs of vehicle separation during three (3) freeze-thaw cycles.
TEST METHOD: A 250 milliliter sample of sealing compound in a pyrex beaker shall be exposed (undisturbed) to three (3) full freeze-thaw cycles as follows: 24 hours @ zero (0) degree F followed by 24 hours at 110 degrees F. Using a 7X power hand lens, no discernible separation of vehicle and filler materials shall be evident through the beaker sidewalls or on the surface of the test specimen. If a second sample fails (if required), the sealing compound does not comply.
7. * WATER RESISTANCE: The maximum water absorption shall be less than 0.75% when three samples are tested in accordance with ASTM C-1016-84 (or later revision) titled "Determination of Water Absorption by Sealant Backup (Joint-Filler) Materials".
8. PAINTABILITY: The sealing compound shall be paintable with either solvent-based or water-based paints.
TEST METHOD: Prepare two 6" x 6" x 1/8" (in.) specimens of sealing compound on a glass plate; smooth the surface by drawing an edge across the surface. Without conditioning, brush on one surface an interior grade acrylic latex paint; brush the remaining specimen with an interior grade oil (solvent type) base paint. No "fisheye" effects shall be discernible on the painted surface after one hour above 60 degrees F.
QUALITY ASSURANCE: The contractor is responsible for full compliance to the above requirements and tests. Raw test data and final test reports shall be available for Government inspection. The Government inspector shall randomly select one unit of issue for Government testing for every 200 units offered the Government.
* An "asterisk" marks those minimum requirements and tests that shall be performed by the designated quality assurance laboratory. The Government may elect to perform every requirement and test for this sealing compound.
