About this file
This document is a Quality Assurance Provisions document for a 26 Foot Diameter Cargo Parachute, dated 6 DEC 2024, with Part Number 11-1-555 and referencing military specification MIL-DTL-43649. The document outlines detailed quality inspection requirements for first article testing (FAT) and conformance inspections of cargo parachute components, specifically covering canopies with risers, deployment bags, and static lines.
The quality assurance provisions specify strict acceptance criteria, including visual examinations and dimensional inspections with specific sampling levels and acceptable quality limits (AQL). For each component, different inspection standards apply: canopies/risers have an S-2 inspection level with 1.0 AQL for major defects and 6.5 for total defects; deployment bags follow similar standards; static lines have slightly different tolerances with a 10 AQL for total defects. The document also mandates air permeability testing of one complete fabricated canopy per week, with any test failure resulting in lot rejection. The document carries a Distribution Statement A, indicating it is approved for public release with unlimited distribution.

Part Number 11-1-555
1. First Article Test (FAT). Paragraph 6.2 d. of Mil-DTL-43649.
1.1 Acceptance criteria for the FAT. The following provides the acceptance criteria for the FAT. Any end item visual defect, major or minor, per Mil-DTL-43649 tables I, II, and IV; any dimension out of tolerance; nonconforming supplies or failure of the test as specified in 4.2 shall be cause for rejection of the FAT.
1.2 Conformance Inspections. Paragraph 6.2 e of Mil-DTL-43649.
a. End Item Visual Examination.
Canopy with Riser. The canopies shall be examined for the applicable defects listed in Mil-DTL-43649 table I. The lot size shall be in units of canopies and risers. The sample unit shall be one canopy and riser. The inspection level shall be S-2 and the acceptable level (AQL), expressed in terms of defects per hundred units, shall be 1.0 for major defects and 6.5 for total (major and minor combined) defects.
Deployment Bag. The bags shall be examined for the applicable defects listed in Mil- DTL-43649 table II. The lot size shall be expressed in units of deployment bags. The sample unit shall be one deployment bag. The inspection level shall be S-2 and the AQL, expressed in terms of defects per hundred units, shall be 1.0 for major defects and 6.5 for total (major and minor combined) defects.
Static Line. The static lines shall be examined for the applicable defects listed in Mil- DTL-43649 table IV. The lot size shall be expressed in units of static lines. The sample unit shall be one static line. The inspection level shall be S-2 and the AQL, expressed in terms of defects per hundred units, shall be 1.0 for major defects and 10 for total (major and minor combined) defects.

b. End item dimensional examination. The end items of complete assemblies shall be examined for conformance to the dimensions specified on the drawings. Only those dimensions that can be evaluated without damaging or disassembling the end items shall be examined. Any dimension not within the specified tolerance shall be classified as a defect. The lot size shall be expressed in units of end items. The sample unit shall be one end item, (see table below).

1.2.1 Conformance inspections. One complete fabricated canopy shall be tested as specified in 4.3. and 4.4 of Mil-DTL-43649 for conformance to the air permeability requirements of 3.3.2. The lot size shall be the number of canopies produced in one week. The sample size shall be the number of end items indicated by inspection level S-2. Any test failure shall be cause for rejection of the lot.
1.3 Sampling. Sampling for inspection shall be performed in accordance with
ANSI/ASQ Z1.4.
1.4 Test Methods. The test method used in the air permeability test, see paragraph 4.6.1 of MIL-DTL-43649, ASTM D 737.
