About this file
This is a Performance Work Statement (PWS) for preventive maintenance and software upgrades of the Zeiss 810 Ultra nano-Computed Tomography (CT) Scanner located at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Aberdeen, Maryland. The objective is to obtain a service contract ensuring continuous, comprehensive preventative maintenance of this specialized X-ray imaging instrument that creates three-dimensional volumetric images of materials with resolution down to 16 nanometer voxel sizes. The contract period consists of one base year plus one option year, with performance required during Government normal working hours (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays).
The scope of work includes four preventative maintenance inspections annually, all associated labor and travel costs for both scheduled and emergency service visits, provision of all necessary tools and replacement parts (including X-Ray Source components), and software version upgrades for Scout-And-Scan, XM Reconstruction, and XM 3D Viewer (versions v16.0.xxx to v16.1.xxx, excluding Windows operating system upgrades). The Contractor must employ factory-trained Customer Support Engineers to conduct inspections and maintenance. Deliverables include comprehensive maintenance reports after each service visit documenting system conditions, required parts replacements, resolution timeframes, software update status, and technical test results including focal spot size, stage alignment calibration, pixel calibration, and system resolution checks. The solicitation indicates the Government intends to award to Carl Zeiss Microscopy, LLC with a response deadline of three business days after posting, issued under FAR authority for only one responsible source.

Performance Work Statement (PWS)
Preventive and Software Maintenance of Zeiss 810 Ultra nano-CT 18 November 2025 C.1 Background
In support of its mission and customer programs, the Materials Response and Design Branch (MRDB) of the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) relies upon The Zeiss Xradia 810 Ultra X-ray Computerized Tomography (CT) Scanner which is a specialized instrument designed to combine a series of X-ray images taken from different angles and uses computer processing to create three–dimensional (3D) volumetric images of materials. This is a highly complex instrument whose hardware and software require regular maintenance in order to remain fully operational and meet performance parameters including a scan resolution down to a 16 nanometer voxel size. This ultra-high resolution requires extreme precision and routine calibrations to meet such fine feature detectability. The preventative maintenance service contract that is requested will be for a service contract period of one (1) base year along with one (1) option year. The Zeiss 810 Ultra X-ray CT Scanner is located at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Aberdeen, MD which is where performance will take place.
C.2 Objective The objective of this request is to obtain a service contract and software upgrades that allows the continued, uninterrupted, comprehensive preventative maintenance of the Zeiss 810 Ultra X-ray CT Scanner and prevent any lapse in coverage.
C.3 Requirement
C.3.1 Preventive maintenance (PM) service inspections and maintenance repair visits shall be initiated by both the Contractor or the Government.
C.3.1.1 When initiating the preventive maintenance (PM) service inspections, the Contractor shall contact Timothy Walter (410) 306-0186, timothy.r.walter3.civ@army.mil ) to schedule an appropriate date and time for the service.
C.3.1.2 The Contractor shall provide all tools and parts required to accomplish all work stated within this PWS.
C.3.2 The preventive maintenance service inspection and maintenance repair visits shall include the following:
C.3.2.1 Four (4) preventative maintenance inspections per year. This includes all labor and travel associated with conducting the PM inspection visits.
C.3.2.2 All labor and travel related charges associated with any service visit in addition to the PM visit as may be required during the contract period.
C.3.2.3 All covered replacement parts, including X-Ray Source.
C.3.2.4 The Contractor shall provide software version upgrades when available for version updates (Scout-And-Scan / XM Reconstruction / XM 3D Viewer v16.0.xxx to v16.1.xxx) and excludes Windows 10 upgrades (Windows 7 Scout-And-Scan v14.0.xxx to Windows 10 Scout-And-Scan v16.0.xxx).
C.3.2.5 All labor and travel related charges associated with any and all service visits, whether scheduled or emergency, as may be required during the contract year, is included.
C.3.2.6 The Contractor shall send factory trained Customer Support Engineers to conduct the inspection and preventive maintenance service.
C.3.3 All work under C.3.2.shall be accomplished during the Government’s normal working hours. Normal working hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Eastern Standard Time (EST), Monday through Friday with the exceptions of holidays (a detailed list of federally-observed holidays will be placed under Section H of the contract).
