9ST54 USER INSTRUCTIONS

The Avon ST54 is a self-contained, open-circuit, compressed-air breathing apparatus that is approved by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

Positive pressure is maintained within the mask during use, thus providing the highest degree of respiratory protection in irrespirable atmospheres by preventing any inward leakage.

The ST54 consists of several major components described in the following paragraphs:

1.0 DESCRIPTION OF THE ST54

The FM54 APR makes use of a Variable Resistance Exhalation Unit (VREU). This contains the Exhale Positive Pressure Module which allows the mask the operational flexibility to be used in APR (Negative Pressure) or SCBA (Positive Pressure) modes. Ensure that the lever of the valve cassette assembly is fully rotated in the correct position.

The FM54 provides the highest level of protection and comfort in the most dangerous environments. The unique polyurethane visor design is highly flexible and is both scratch and impact resistant.

Plus, the visor offers excellent field of view, visual awareness and weapon sighting capability. The patented exhalation assembly with twin valves must be in SCBA mode only. Must be in SCBA mode during SCBA operations.

DESCRIPTION OF THE ST54 SCBA (continued)

FIRST STAGE PRESSURE REDUCER

REMOTE CYLINDER PRESSURE AND END-OF-SERVICE TIME INDICATORS

Air leaves the cylinder, passes through a sintered bronze filter in the handwheel assembly, and then continues on to the first-stage pressure reducer where it is reduced to approxi-mately 125 psi.

The reducer is a simple piston design that requires no adjustment and incorporates an au-tomatic, self-seating pressure relief valve to protect the downstream low-pressure compo-nents. It is made of high quality aluminum, and is securely mounted inside the backframe.

The remote pressure gauge and whistle assembly is chest mounted on the right shoulder strap. The pressure gauge is waterproof with a protective cover and features a luminescent dial and pointer markings.

There are two optional pressure gauges:

one is with fractional indicators that shows the fraction of cylinder pressure remaining and the other is white luminescent with numeric indicators.

The primary End-of-Service-Time indicator is a whistle which is set to sound at 25% - 29% of rated cylinder pressure.

11ST54 USER INSTRUCTIONS

CYLINDER AND VALVE ASSEMBLY

FR BACKFRAME AND HARNESS

The backframe and harness assembly utilize ergonomic design principles to produce a comfortable, low profile unit that evenly distributes the SCBA weight between the wearer’s hips and shoulders.

A range of cylinder types, colors, and capacities are available on the ST54; 4500 psi in 30, 45 and 60 minute durations and 5500 psi in 70 minute durations. (Please see the table in Section 1 for specifics.)

The cylinder valve is of forged aluminum construction with a permanent Teflon coating. The valve outlet is a standard CGA-347 fitting on 4500 and 5500 psi cylinders. Each valve has a frangible disc safety relief device, and a dual-reading pressure gauge. Valve protection is provided by an elastomeric bumper.

It is important to protect the CGA threads so that the pneumatics will always screw onto them without doing damage to the handwheel on the pneumatics.

The cylinders and valve are matched according to pressure. The maximum pressure on the gauge built into the cylinder valve should match the pressure rating on the cylinder. All ST54 models will have black handwheels no matter what the pressure rating of the cylinder.

■ The unique double-wall backframe of the ST54 protects major airlines and the first stage reducer. A quick-release cylinder strap fits a wide range of cylinders with an infinitely adjustable latch to ensure a tight fitting cylinder.

■ The harness material is fire retardant, custom woven KEVLAR®. The upper harness has very resilient foam rubber padding for added comfort and a KEVLAR® blend cover for maximum durability and protection. A lower lumbar pad is standard for added comfort and support. The shoulder straps are quick release to aid in doffing or jettison of the

SCBA.

Ensure only a 4500 psi cylinder is used with a 4500 psi pneumatic system and only a 5500 psi cylinder is used with a 5500 psi pneumatic system.

These safety checks must be performed before entering a hazardous area. Failure to perform these checks may result in respiratory injury or death.

Do not over-tighten the mask. Doing so may cause discomfort and/or deformation of the mask seal resulting in leakage.

POSITIVE PRESSURE FIT CHECK: With cylinder valve open, breathe normally.

Insert two fingers between the mask and face. Gently lift the mask seal away from the face and ensure a good outward flow of air, showing that the mask pressure is positive. Reseal mask and stop breathing for 3 seconds. There should be no sound of air leaking from the regulator, and there should be no airflow sensed in the eye region of the mask.

FM54

SCBA mode

FM54: Ensure the level of the VREU assembly is fully positioned to the 11 o’clock position.

19ST54 USER INSTRUCTIONS

DONNING PROCEDURES AND SAFETY CHECKS (continued)

ALARM CHECK: Close the cylinder valve and continue to breathe normally. Monitor pressure gauge and listen for the whistle to activate as the gauge needle enters into the red zone. Open cylinder valve fully.

Take two to three deep breaths to ensure adequate air is flowing into the mask. The mask should not move towards the face.

RE-CHECK CYLINDER PRESSURE: Remote cylinder pressure gauge should read above 90% of maximum rated pressure. Breathe normally and proceed as planned.

If any of the checks fail, do not proceed. Remove the apparatus from service, tag, and return for repair by authorized personnel.

The ST54 is NIOSH approved as a positive pressure respirator only.

Although the FM54 mask uses a variable exhalation valve, this valve must only be used in the SCBA mode only. Switching the mode from SCBA to APR mode will void the NIOSH approval. Using the ST54 in any other configuration is not approved and this non-approved use may cause severe injury or death.

Again, use the ST54 only in the positive pressure mode.

ST54 USER INSTRUCTIONS20

4.0 DURING USE

Monitor cylinder pressure during use for remaining air supply and allow sufficient time for egress.

The End-of-Service-Time indicator (whistle alarm) activates when there is approximately 25% of the full air supply remaining. Egress when alarm activates.

One example would be a long-distance ingress through a continuous IDLH (Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health) atmosphere. In such situations, begin egress prior to activation of the End-of-Service-Time indicator.

NORMAL USE

25% of a full cylinder may be Insufficient in some circumstances to safely exit from an idlh atmosphere.

The user should have received training on how to handle a possible emergency before entering a hazardous area.
