About this file

This document is a Performance Work Statement (PWS) for an engineering design of a customized gearbox housing required by the Army Research Directorate (ARD) within the United States Army Research Laboratory (ARL). The contractor shall provide one design for the customized gearbox housing that is compatible with the existing gears, shafts, and bearings purchased under a prior contract. The design must meet specific requirements including compatibility with existing components, oil galleries and drains, a robust housing split interface, appropriate seals, and an aluminum alloy material with a minimum ultimate tensile strength. The contractor shall deliver the engineering design in the form of a CAD file within 14 weeks of contract award. The information generated from this contract will have a Distribution Statement B, limiting distribution to U.S. Government Agencies only.

Performance Work Statement (PWS) Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG)

Engineering Design for a customized Gearbox Housing 26 March 2024

C.1. BACKGROUND

The Army Research Directorate (ARD) within the United States Army Research Laboratory (ARL) requires the creation of an engineering design for a customized gearbox housing that they currently own the gears, shafts and bearings for, these parts being purchased under contract W911QX24P0004. A new gearbox housing design is necessary to address additional mechanical loadings coming from electrification of the existing internal combustion engine. The most important part of the gearbox housing design is to keep the compatibility with the existing gears, shafts, and bearings. The compatibility includes many aspects such as mechanical connections, geometrical constraints, and loading conditions.

C.2. OBJECTIVE

The Contractor shall perform the necessary work to ensure the engineering design for the customized gearbox housing is compatible with the already existing gears, shafts and bearings purchased under contract W911QX24P0004 and the design will be ready to use for assembly purposes.

C.3. REQUIREMENT

C3.1 The Contractor shall provide one (1) design for the customized gearbox housing as follows:

C.3.1.1 The design for the customized gearbox housing must be compatible with the existing gears, shafts, and bearings purchased from the contract W911QX24P0004.

C.3.1.2 The design for the customized gearbox housing must be compatible with the Engine Adapter Plate part number TAE 90-0020-03195 02, compatible with the Hydraulic Propellor Controller part number 90-0020-0234901 and compatible with the shaft driven Oil Pump part number 90-0020-02482 01 that are currently owned by ARL. Part specifications will be provided by ARL as needed.

C.3.1.3 The design for the customized gearbox housing must have the appropriate oil galleries and drains for distribution of oil throughout the housing.

C.3.1.4 The design for the customized gearbox housing must have a housing split interface that has robust integral interlocking features, appropriately spaced fasteners and sufficient gasket surface area to maintain continuous mechanical pressure and sealing.

C.3.1.5 Any externally protruding shafts that are a part of the design for the customized gearbox housing must have sufficient seals be present and retained.

C.3.1.6 The design for the customized gearbox housing must have a housing that is made from Aluminum alloy material, with a minimum Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) of 250 Megapascals (MPa).

C3.1.7 All threaded holes of the customized gearbox housing design must have stainless steel threaded inserts.

C3.1.8 The design for the customized gearbox housing, under the basic loading conditions provided in contract W911QX24P0004, must maintain a minimum Factor of Safety of 2.5 at all points.

C.4 Deliverables

C.4.1 The Contractor shall provide a Engineering design in the form of a Computer Aided Design (CAD) File within 14 weeks of award of this contract.

C.5. DISTRIBUTION STATEMENT:

C.5.1. Determination of the PWS document:

Distribution Statement A: Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited C.5.2. Determination for Information generated from Contract:

Distribution Statement B: Distribution authorized to U.S. Government

Agencies only (Proprietary Information) (April 2024). Other requests for this document shall be referred to FCDD-RLA-VA.
