Version 11-30-2016-1 FAR Part 11—Describing Agency Needs
PURCHASE DESCRIPTION
1. Statement of Need and Purpose:
The National Institute on Aging (NIA) requires a robot stereotaxicsystem for mice. Investing in a robot stereotaxic system for neuroscience research is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, it offers unparalleled precision in targeting specific brain regions during experimental procedures, minimizing variability and ensuring consistent results across experiments. This precision is especially vital when conducting delicate surgeries or inserting electrodes for recording or stimulation. Additionally, a robot stereotaxic system can streamline experimental workflows, allowing researchers to perform procedures more efficiently and thus increasing productivity in the lab. Moreover, the automation provided by such a system reduces the risk of human error, enhancing the reliability and reproducibility of research findings. Overall, acquiring a robot stereotaxic system not only improves the quality of neuroscience research but also enhances the welfare of experimental animals by minimizing surgical invasiveness and optimizing experimental outcomes.
2. Background Information and Objective:
Stereotaxic surgeries are a common and essential technique in neurosciences. Injection of substances and biologicals, or implantation of cannulas, electrodes, lenses, and optic fibers in specific regions of the brain are all powerful interventions in neuroscience yielding valuable information. Robotic stereotaxic systems represent a revolutionary advancement in neuroscience research methodology. Traditionally, stereotaxic procedures rely on manual manipulations, which are subject to human error and lack the precision demanded by modern experimental designs. Robotic stereotaxic systems address these limitations by offering unparalleled accuracy and reproducibility in targeting specific brain regions. Equipped with sophisticated imaging and navigation technologies, these systems enable researchers to precisely position probes, electrodes, or cannulas with submillimeter accuracy, facilitating intricate experimental manipulations such as deep brain stimulation, optogenetics, or pharmacological infusions. By automating and standardizing these procedures, robotic stereotaxic systems enhance experimental consistency, reproducibility, and the reliability of research outcomes. Moreover, they optimize the welfare of experimental animals by minimizing surgical invasiveness and reducing procedure durations. In essence, the integration of robotic stereotaxic systems in neuroscience research aims to revolutionize experimental methodologies, accelerating the pace of discovery and advancing our understanding of the brain's intricate functions.
