About this file

This document is a Purchase Description for bookbinding equipment for the Florida National Guards print shop. The organization seeks to upgrade its current manual bookbinding operations by acquiring two key pieces of equipment: a stand-alone automatic hole punch machine and a stand-alone table-top electric coil inserter and crimper. The hole punch machine specifications include a feeder and reception tray capacity up to 250mm, sheet size range of 138-300mm, sheet weight from 70-250 gsm, punch speed up to 45,000 sheets/hour, and features like interchangeable tooling and a touch screen control panel. Additional requirements include two specific document puncher dies (45mm oval and 4.75mm round holes).

The coil inserter and crimper must be compatible with up to 20mm binding coils, have a 4:1 punch with an oversized oval, include a cut & crimper unit and 13 spine formers, and feature a foot-pedal activation, LCD display, and electric diagnostic capabilities. The primary goal is to improve efficiency from the current rate of 450 booklets every 8 hours to 450 booklets per hour, which will allow the print shop to handle large binding jobs while maintaining other operational functions. The document notes that the specified features are based on standard plain paper and may vary with different paper styles, but will still provide significantly improved processing speeds compared to the current manual methods.

Bookbinding Equipment for Print Shop

Purchase Description

Background

The Florida National Guards print shop is looking to refine and improve efficiently on its current booklet binding operations due to the increase in request over the last few years.

The two main components of the binding equipment required in this request consists of a hole punch machine and a coil inserter. The most efficient way forward while staying within our budget is a stand-alone automatic hole punch machine and a stand-alone coiling machine which in turn will reduce the amount of time it takes to hole punch/coil individual booklets. The current methods of book binding are done with manual equipment that has been in place for about ten years. At times print shop employees are given such short suspense extra man hours after work are required to finish jobs especially when it is requested by the CMD floor which we cannot hold off or reject. Finding a solution that could coil and bind up to 450 booklets in 1 hour compared to the current rate at about 450 booklets every 8 hours with better quality would drastically improve the overall operations of the printshop. When they have a large booklet binding job, they are not able to handle all the other functions in the print shop which are combined with the mailroom operations.

To meet the operations standard of 450 booklets per hour we are seeking a stand-alone hole punch machine with at least a feeder and reception tray capacity up to 250mm (5 reams / 2500 sheets) and at a minimum it has the following features;

• Min sheet size = 138 mm (PE = Punching Edge) / Max Sheet size = 300 mm (PE = Punching Edge)

• Sheet weight From 70 to 250 gsm

• Cycle speed 50, 60 and 75 cycles/minute

• Punch speed Up to 45 000 sheets/hour

• Byte thickness Selectable from 0.4 mm to 1.00 mm

• Tooling Interchangeable with retractable pins

• Tool change over 2 minutes ; integral storage space for 3 dies

• Control panel Touch screen

• Format set up time Via touch screen and hand wheel in less than 5 minutes

Additionally required is a Document Puncher Plus Die 45mm Oval holes and a Document Puncher Plus Die 4.75mm Round Holes.

To stay on pace with the above hole punching operations of booklets we are looking for a stand-alone Table-Top Electric Automatic Coil Inserter and Crimper with at a minimum the following features;

• Compatible with up to 20mm Binding coils and up to 11-710” edge

• Requires 4:1 punch with an oversized oval

• Includes cut & crimper unit & set of 13 spine formers

• Foot-pedal activated to leave both hands free for handling

• LCD display screen

• Ob board electric diagnostic capabilities

• 2475” pitch to fit the common 8.5” / 11” / A4 / A5 binding edges

• Preset cut and bend mounted blocks with adjustments for the common 8.5” / 11”

• No extra tools or shop air to run – fully electronic

• Vertical book placement to accommodate tabs or wider covers

NOTE: the above features are based off basic plain paper and can vary if different styles of paper are requested in a job. This is due to the thickness and weight of paper, but we are gauging our standard off the average booklet request. Special requests will still be of greater speed with the above capacities’ than the current rate.
