Background:
Florida’s Coral Reef is currently experiencing a multi-year disease-related mortality event, that has resulted in massive die-offs in multiple coral species. Approximately 21 species of coral, including both Endangered Species Act-listed and the primary reef-building species, have displayed tissue loss lesions which often result in whole colony mortality. First observed near Virginia Key in late 2014, the disease has since spread to the northernmost extent of Florida’s Coral Reef, and southwest past the Marquesas in the Lower Florida Keys. The best available information indicates that the disease outbreak is continuing to spread west and throughout the Caribbean.
Ocean Alchemists LLC, is the developer and supplier of the best available product, a coral ointment which is now being utilized by coral disease response teams to treat high priority corals across Florida’s Coral Reef. Previously developed as part of CoreRx Inc. the founders of Ocean Alchemists LLC have been working with various partners involved in the Florida coral disease response effort to support investigations into various research questions and the development of an effective delivery mechanism for topically applying treatments to individual coral colonies.
Preliminary results show that treatment delivered by this coral ointment has a ~75% success rate in stopping individual disease lesions from progressing across a coral colony. As corals without treatments have suffered complete mortality and other treatments have had much lower success rates, this is the best treatment option currently available and is believed to be helping to save hundreds of corals which would have otherwise already perished from disease.
Project Goals and Objectives:
The goal of this project is to continue to manufacture and supply disease response teams in Florida with ‘CoralCure Ointment Base2B’ for the active lesion-level treatment of corals with SCTLD. Base2B has proven to be ~75% effective against the disease in recorded treatments throughout Florida over the last year, depending on the species. Continued supply of ointment will allow for hundreds of corals to continue to receive treatment for SCTLD in 2022 and 2023.
It is requested that reasonable efforts will be made by the research parties involved to provide credit to Ocean Alchemists LLC on any publications or press utilizing the products provided under the Scope of Work. It is also requested that any information provided about the product’s composition (including the distribution of Safety Data Sheets) will be kept as proprietary information.
The outcomes of this project will be incorporated into an on-going coral disease response effort which seeks to improve understanding about the scale and severity of the coral disease outbreak on Florida’s Coral Reef, identify primary and secondary causes, identify management actions to remediate disease impacts, restore affected resources, and ultimately prevent future outbreaks.
As such, collaboration amongst partners is encouraged when appropriate to avoid duplication of efforts and ensure alignment of needs. Coordination with other Principal Investigators is recommended and required, as appropriate.
Methods and Quality Assurance This Scope of Work has been reviewed and approved by the Disease Advisory Committee.
Furthermore, activities detailed herein will be conducted under the advisement of the Disease

Advisory Committee and the Steering Committee as needed/appropriate, ensuring that methodologies are not duplicated, best practices are employed, and project results are effectively communicated to all stakeholders. The project objectives and methodology detailed in this Scope of Work are the outcome of the annual Coral Disease Technical Workshop; this project is fulfilling a priority recommendation(s) from the experts convened during that workshop.
All test methods are internally peer reviewed and testing will be conducted against known standards on validated and calibrated instrumentation. This includes pipettes, balances, and UV Spectrometers. Manufacturing processes are captured in standard operating procedures (SOPs).
