About this file
This is a National Register Nomination Form for the Pulaski County Courthouse, a historic structure located on Courthouse Square in Hawkinsville, Georgia, prepared by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources as part of a thematic architectural survey of Georgia courthouses. The Pulaski County Courthouse was constructed in 1874 and is a Neo-Classical style building featuring brick and stucco facade materials in good condition. The structure is situated on approximately one acre at the northeast corner of the courthouse block (parcel H-36, Lot 225, Zone 17) and is distinguished by its symmetrical facade with a tetrastyle entrance portico, fluted columns with partially removed capitals, full entablature with pediment and bracketed cornice, square windows on the first story, Palladian windows on the second story, and a prominent four-stage clock tower with an octagonal middle section and bronze onion dome. The building was constructed in sections, with a clock installed in 1885 and a rear addition completed in 1910.
The nomination documentation notes that the courthouse's interior has been substantially altered with lowered ceilings and acoustical tile installation, though the building retains an unusual chapel feature adjacent to the courtroom that includes a cross-marked door, lectern with Bible, pews, and is currently used for weddings and prayer groups. The structure's condition is assessed as good, and it is nominated for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. This documentation is directly relevant to the related Pulaski County Commissioner's request for proposals for courthouse window replacement at 141 Commerce Street, Hawkinsville, Georgia, which requires selected contractors to comply with historic preservation standards while improving energy efficiency and maintaining the building's original architectural character.
