About this file

This document contains geotechnical exploration drill logs prepared by Shannon & Wilson, Inc. for the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) in support of the OR 58 Bridge Seismic Retrofit project in Oakridge, Oregon. The file includes detailed subsurface investigation data from multiple boring locations along OR 58 between Mileposts 2.46 and 42.93, specifically for the Coast Fork Willamette River to Upper Salt Creek Bridges area. The drill logs document soil and rock stratigraphy, Standard Penetration Test (SPT) results, soil classification using the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS), and groundwater observations. Drilling activities were conducted in June 2014 and December 2019 using various advancement methods including mud rotary drilling, sonic coring, and hollow stem auger techniques. The boreholes (USB-1, USB-2, USC-1, and USC-2) reached depths ranging from approximately 49 to 69 feet and encountered diverse soil profiles including fill materials, sandy gravel alluvium, silty sand layers, and weathered basalt bedrock at depth.

The subsurface investigation revealed stratified deposits with notable variations across boring locations. Fill materials consisting of asphalt concrete, sandy gravel, and clayey sand occupy the upper 0 to 20 feet at most locations, with evidence of oiled fill and petroleum odor at certain depths. Natural alluvium below fill includes dense to very dense sandy gravel with cobbles and boulders, interspersed with zones of silty sand and silty clay. Groundwater was encountered at varying depths, with drilling fluid loss documented at multiple intervals, suggesting permeable zones and potential cavity conditions in the subsurface. Soil parameters indicate moderate to high plasticity fines in lower zones and nonplastic to low plasticity fines in upper gravel strata. The logs note drilling complications including difficult boulder penetration, drill rod failure, and lost circulation, reflecting challenging subsurface conditions requiring specialized drilling techniques for the planned seismic retrofit work.
