About this file
This is a Project Manual for the Galesburg-Augusta Middle School Playground, prepared by Tower Pinkster Titus Associates, Inc. for Galesburg-Augusta Community Schools located in Galesburg, Michigan. The project (No. 14-182.22) encompasses the design and construction of a comprehensive playground facility including freestanding and composite structure playground equipment, site clearing and earth moving operations, concrete paving for walkways, playground protective surfacing, chain-link fencing, site furnishings (benches and picnic tables), and turf establishment. The specifications detail requirements for a swing unit, spinner unit, and play structure from approved manufacturers including GameTime, Creative Recreational Systems, Inc., Play Environments Inc., BCI Burke Company, Landscape Structures Inc., and Miracle Midwest. Additional work includes removal of existing site improvements, installation of engineered wood fiber protective surfacing with a critical height of 10 feet, construction of concrete walkways with specified compressive strength of 4,000 psi, installation of chain-link fencing with aluminum-coated or aluminum wire fabric, and seeding of turf areas. The project manual was dated December 7, 2016, with a 2019 revision.
The specifications require compliance with multiple safety and construction standards including ASTM F 1487, CPSC No. 325, ACI 301, and ASTM standards for concrete, reinforcement, and chain-link fencing. Playground equipment must be certified by IPEMA's third-party product certification service, and a five-year warranty is required from the manufacturer for equipment components. Field quality control includes engagement of a factory-authorized Certified Playground Inspector and testing by qualified independent agencies for concrete compressive strength, soil compaction, and turf establishment. Turf maintenance must be provided for a minimum of 60 days from planting completion until establishment. The project specifications allow for unit prices for supplemental excavation and engineered fill if unsatisfactory soil conditions are encountered. All materials, including topsoil with specific pH and organic matter requirements, grass seed mixes, and fertilizers, must meet specified standards or equivalent approved alternatives.
