About this file

This document provides details on a federal contract opportunity for maintenance dredging of the East River South Brother Island Channel in New York. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers proposes to dredge approximately 425,000 cubic yards of material from the channel to a depth of 35 feet below mean lower low water plus two feet of allowable overdepth. The dredged material consisting of 13.9% sand, 63.9% silt, and 22.2% clay will be placed at the Historic Area Remediation Site. A mechanical dredge with a closed clamshell environmental bucket must be used due to water quality restrictions. Multiple scows and tugboats will also be required to support dredging and placement operations. The dredged material must meet all applicable federal, state, and local criteria. Work must commence within five days of notice to proceed and maintain a production rate of at least 8,000 cubic yards per day to minimize vessel traffic impacts while dredging. The work is estimated to cost between $5 million and $10 million and take place in the fall/winter of 2023.
