Project Title Conversion of a walk-in Conviron Growth Chamber Air Conditioning to Air Cooled System

General Information

1.0 Background and Purpose

A major objective of our research unit is studying the impact of environmental conditions, such as temperature, on the development and susceptibility of food crops. Critical to this mission is the ability to grow crops in our temperature controlled growth chamber made by the company Conviron. The temperature, lighting, and other systems in this chamber are all tightly controlled within scientifically defined parameters by Conviron-patented software and computer system. It is important that all the physical components of the system be compatible as the Conviron computer system and software must operate the air-conditioning and lighting systems. The proposed construction project aims to alter one component of the air-conditioning system – the water-cooled condenser must be changed to an air-cooled condenser. Other components, such as the A/C compressor also require modification or replacement. All components must be compatible with the existing Conviron hardware and computer system to operate correctly. Further, all post-installation testing must be done using the Conviron user interface and system controls. Our building infrastructure is no longer able to supply chilled water sufficient to operate the existing system.

2.0 Definitions

None used.

Contractor Requirements

3.0 Technical Requirements / Tasks

Contractor must be trained and certified to modify Conviron environmental control systems, including the user interface and the electrical/software control of the temperature and lighting components. Contractor should be competent in the installation of all necessary plumbing/electrical components for installation of air-cooled condenser. Contractor should be knowledgeable in programming the software and performance testing the system for accurate performance within Conviron’s original user specifications for acceptable scientific parameters.

4.0 Deliverable / Schedule

Contractor should order all materials and make a best faith effort to have materials shipped to the SRRC in New Orleans within 30 business days of contract agreement.

Contractor should install all components and ensure compatibility with Conviron software within 30 business days of materials arriving in New Orleans.

Contractor should test the system using the Conviron computer user interface for a period of 24 hours and provide written results of temperature control testing (temperature settings vs actual temperature) after installation with and without full lighting. Temperature control must be within Conviron Growth Chamber original specifications. Contractor should be available for at least a period of 1 year for trouble shooting and instructions with awareness of software programing procedures.

11.0 Performance Requirement Measures

Performance Objective
Required Task or Deliverable
Performance Standard
Method of Surveillance
Positive/Negative Incentive

% for NOT meeting the Task

Growth Chamber should have reliable and accurate temperature control system
Growth Chamber should reach and maintain desired temperature indefinitely and fluctuate only within Conviron specifications
Temperatures should not fluctuate beyond stated tolerances for the Conviron growth chamber. Fluctuation between two set points should be monitored with lights on and off.

24 hours of testing after installation.

1 year of technical assistance.

+/- 1% of total monthly price for each variance of +/- 1% variance from standard.
