1. BACKGROUND
The US Army recognizes the need for accelerated modernization of weapon systems through Advanced Manufacturing (AdvM) technologies that directly address issues and challenges in the supply chain to underpin readiness of Army materiel. In accordance with (IAW) Army Regulation (AR) 750-1 (Army Materiel Maintenance Policy) and companion Department of the Army Pamphlet (DA PAM) 750-1 (Army Materiel Maintenance Procedures), Commanders, U.S. Army Organic Industrial Base (OIB) activities will develop additive and advanced capabilities consistent with Army Materiel Command (AMC) guidance to produce Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) quality parts for use to meet obsolescence and other readiness requirements as required.
This Call for Solution aims to establish AdvM FDM print capability at Corpus Christi Army Depot (CCAD), Corpus Christi, TX and Letterkenny Army Depot (LEAD), Chambersburg, PA.
2. PROBLEM STATEMENT
The U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command (AMCOM) require immediate integration of AdvM FDM capability at CCAD and LEAD to address critical readiness gaps in aviation maintenance operations. Current supply chain constraints result in extended lead times for obsolete and low-demand repair parts, directly impacting Aircraft on Ground (AOG) rates and operational readiness across rotary-wing platforms. The integration of material extrusion technology will enable CCAD and LEAD to rapidly fabricate qualified parts, tools, jigs, fixtures, and ground support equipment in accordance with applicable airworthiness qualification requirements.
The Army's Advanced Manufacturing (AdvM) FDM capability is fundamentally differentiated from standard Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) equipment through stringent security and operational specifications designed for rugged industrial and aviation maintenance environments. While standard COTS printers are built for general office use, these advanced systems are hardened with a highly secure Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIG) compliant operating system running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 (RHEL 8)—a critical cybersecurity requirement entirely absent from commercial printers.
Operationally, these machines transcend typical desktop limitations by utilizing high-strength, high-temperature, and engineering-grade materials such as Ultem, Antero, and PPSF to produce flight-qualified aviation parts, specialized tools, and custom fixtures. This industrial-grade capability is further reinforced by an exceptional build accuracy of up to +/- 0.0035 inches and massive build envelopes reaching up to 36 x 24 x 36 inches, transforming the technology from a basic office appliance into a robust, mission-critical manufacturing asset for defense operations
